Short Answers Professor (Tutor) The Name of the School (University) The City and State Date Short Answers Q1 The TV commercial for Budweiser USA titled ‘Puppy Love’ has a strong emotional appeal (Schoultz, 2014, p. 1). The commercial focuses on illustrating how a puppy is a best friend to its owner. This generates a positive emotional appeal with the audience. Audiences can relate to the love shared between the puppy and its owner. Moreover, the advert also features emotional music that focuses on highlighting emotions. The basic message in this commercial is that it is always nice or good to have your best friend by you always. Friendship is used as the main emotional appeal in the commercial, thus making a distinctive argument for buying the product. Q2 An example of a fallacy in an advertisement is the message offered in Hilary Clinton’s presidential campaign. The campaign claimed that Hilary was qualified to become president since her husband was president at one time (Rubin, 2013, p. 1). This has no logical connection and presents irrelevant issues that can be defined as red herring. Q3 a) Gordon Elliot: Good Morning Australia Talk Show. I would like to now Gordon’s life in school. Non-verbal communication: wearing an expensive suit that is formal. Gordon has a sense of humor based on his facial expression. He also pats and greets his guests firmly. The tone of his voice is vibrant, sharp, and respectful. b) Results from polygraph tests are controversial with evidence illustrating they can be reliable or not. Polygraph test results can be useful when the person being asked questions is in a balanced psychological position (Royo, 2011, p. 1). However, a dishonest person may be calm during the test, which would mean that they can tell lies. Its admissibility is also controversial since not all situations or results can help to acquire the intended results. Q4 a) Time is very important in my work as well as studies. Being confident and positive in life is truly important to me. No the list did not match. I guess I am not spending time what is truly important to me. b) Time is very important in communication. This is because time can tell much about a person without using words (University of Canberra, 2015, p. 427). For instance, people who are always late may be disorganized in their work while punctual people may be well organized. Moreover, time is important in ensuring that one can meet desired expectations across different cultures. For instance, people in Sweden are punctual while Mexicans do not really adhere to punctuality meaning lateness is allowed or acceptable. Q5 I propose a toast to our team leader, your resilience and passion in your work is exceptional, congratulations for making this contract successful. Cheers!!! Q6 The presentation of speakers in the BET Awards 2014 has both effective and ineffective introductions. The speaker is introduced with a joke that illustrates the basic fun or comic elements of the award being presented. Moreover, the person introducing the speaker also mentions their recent works and major achievements. However, the second introduction in the awards is ineffective as the speaker is only introduced by his name and what he is expected to do. No details or honor is granted to the speaker, thus it is ineffective. Moreover, the second speaker does not seem to have practiced at all. Q7 a) The acceptance speech given by the winner is effective because the winner appreciates the reward. Moreover, the winner indicates the relevance of the reward to her career, the industry, and fans. This connects to the community as well and also acknowledges the award with respect and dignity (Dewey, 2014, p. 1). (Source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=73fz_uK-vhs) b) The acceptance speech in this case is ineffective because the winner does not even know the name of the award being presented. Moreover, the speech does not indicate how the award is linked the community. Moreover, the winner does not illustrate dignity and respect while illustrating her honor (The Boombox, 2015, p. 1). (Source: http://hollywoodlife.com/2015/06/29/nicki-minaj-disses-lil-kim-bet-awards-speech/) Q8 I would like to congratulate everyone in the sales team for their effort towards their work. However, as we all now, sales have declined for two consecutive quarters. This has placed increased pressure on the company, and it is in the best interest to inform you of few changes to ensure the company operates effectively. The working hours and salary from now on will be reduced by 20%. I would like to encourage all of you to put greater effort in your work, and invite anyone with ideas or strategies that can help our sales increase. Q9 The crises communication plan is based on ensuring that the company can assess and oversee the critical role of communication during a crises situation. It includes how to use the crisis plan, its purpose, and the communication checklist overview (Colorado non-profits, 2015, p. 1). The plan offers employees the guidelines to follow in terms of communication in crises. Nonetheless, the communication plan does not offer a meeting point. The meeting point is not emphasized while issues surrounding designated speakers or people are also not emphasized. Q10 I have observed different variations in personal needs in other people from one situation to another. Each person has their interpersonal needs that are shaped by their current or past experiences. One’s situation may lead to a different need. This means that it is important to understand one’s needs to be effective in their work and life. I believe that interpersonal needs play an integral role in developing one’s inner ability and confidence. Nonetheless, it is challenging for one to evaluate their needs given the many situations one has to face at a given time in their life. Overall, interpersonal needs are important in shaping one’s communication abilities as well as skills. Q11 a) I remember having a conflict with my small sister when I was growing up. It was about who could watch what on the television. This conflict was resolved through avoidance. When the argument became so intense, I almost resulted to violence, but I resolved to walk out of the room since my sister was younger. Through avoidance, it is possible to have extra time for resolving the conflict. Later we did not talk for days and the conflict was resolved by managing emotions. I set aside my differences with my sister and the conflict ended. b) I remember once we had an argument with a workmate about the best technologies to use for marketing. The conflict was supporting the use of social media over print media. The conflict was resolved after realizing that my support for social media was not well evidenced and the use of face-detracting and face-saving. There was a positive outcome in this conflict after my workmate engaged me in a conversation on social media advertising. The conversation was so productive that we teamed up to start a social media campaign that was successful. Through this experience I leant a lot on making evidenced arguments while maintaining my emotions to avoid over-reacting. Q12 The movie “Shopping Center King” is an American comedy that was translated to the title “Shopping Center King” in Germany (Blauvelt, 2015, p. 1). The change is based on culture since most Germans would perceive the first title as offensive based on their negative experiences with CCTV surveillance. Another example is animated movie “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs”. The movie has been translated to different titles especially cultures where meatballs are not a popular food (Blauvelt, 2015, p. 1). The movie has been translated to “it’s Raining Kofta” in Turkey and Its “Raining Falafel” in Israel to match the popular foods in each culture (Blauvelt, 2015, p. 1). Lastly, the movie “American Hustle” has been translated to “American Dream” in Israel since their culture does not recognize hustle as a popular word or phrase (Blauvelt, 2015, p. 1). Q13 There are numerous expat networks that offer increased information on the process of acculturation. One of these expat networks is the exaptinfodesk.com. The expat network offers a variety of resources including expat websites, expat forums, expat women and families, general expat life, and expat social life (Exap info Desk, 2015, p. 1). Moreover, there are numerous forums where people share their experiences that highlight their acculturation process. These expat forums are a significant resource for new expats who may require information on how to successfully work overseas. Q14 a) It is not possible for an outsider to help a group to move from the storming stage to the norming stage. This is because the storming stage involves members engaging in direct communication. This cannot be effective with an outsider since conflict may arise easily. An outsider does not have any clue about the other members, thus they may offend them easily. Additionally, the norming stage involves development of rules about communication. This includes describing the rank, roles, and status. For an outsider, it would be impossible to offer the appropriate rules that can easily be unacceptable to the group members. b) I was once a member of the entrepreneurship group in school. I was a marginal member since I was tied up in other responsibilities to the point that I was no longer involved. The group was a focused on offering resources, ideas, and encouragement for aspiring entrepreneurs. I gained my interest in the group based on their ability to invite successful entrepreneurs to offer advice on the topic. I joined the group to enhance my entrepreneurship skills as well as experiences and gain a network of entrepreneurs. I left due to other activities and loss of interest in the group. Q15 a) One challenge or problem I encountered in the past by a group is the increase of customer complains. The group resolved the problem by increasing the time taken to answer calls and resolve customer issues. The move was not that satisfactory based on the lack of quality services and products. The product had not been enhanced, thus the complaints continued to increase. The group only defined the problem, decided on a solution, and implemented the solution. Nonetheless, if the group followed the seven-step framework, the problem would have been solved effectively. This means identifying the problem, giving alternative options, and evaluating the implementation. b) The use of the cost benefit analysis is useful since it help to identify and understand the most rewarding decisions and what they will cost. Such costs and benefits can be helpful in ensuring the right solution is used or followed. Q16 Mr. John is a great leader. He became a leader by appointment following his success in bringing people together for a common course. He was appointed by the top management after successfully supervising the customer care department. His leadership style is a coach since he takes the time to teach and mentor his followers. He believes in each individual’s potential, thus works to encourage people by coaching them on how to be hard working and successful in their duties. References Blauvelt, C., 2015.
