I have marked the revision in green colorthanks ..regards NETWORK DESIGN AND SIMULATION Question 1. Introduction A Shanghai Network Corporation requirement for a LAN is the primary purpose of this project to help the management in their planning and implementation. The construction and installation of such computer network will enable the company to enhance their operations and ensure compatibility for future growth and expansion. The installation includes proven networking techniques and cost effective upgradeable hardware and software that would deliver the LAN requirements with minimal cost. Physical infrastructure of the company office will be investigated and carefully evaluated to precisely plan the layout of the LAN. More importantly, it will be analyzed and properly assess to estimate the cost of networking. Study and recommendations for appropriate networking topology based on physical structure of the building. The advantage and disadvantage of such recommended topology. The works include surveys, cabling, server, workstations and network adapter configurations, installation of switches in strategic locations, operating systems, utilities and application software and commissioning. A summary of proposed network design will be submitted to the management for their comments and approval. 2. Floor Plan and Network Cabling Layout The Shanghai Network Corporation LAN - PC LP - Local Printer NP - Net Printer HS - Switch SR - LAN Server Link- Switch-to-Switch Link CT - CAT-5 Cable - Information Outlet Question 2: Network Services 1. Network Operating System Installation of Microsoft Windows Server 2003 in the Network Server. It is a multipurpose operating system competent of handling a varied set of server roles such as file and print serving functions. In the anticipated expansion it will provide World Wide Web services such as e-mail, terminal, streaming media, remote access and virtual private networking. Dependable, "Windows Server 2003 is the fastest, most reliable, most secure Windows server operating system ever offered by Microsoft. Windows Server 2003"(Microsoft, 2002). It provides IT infrastructure that delivers fundamental value: improved reliability, better availability, and increased scalability. This includes application platforms with built-in traditional application server functionality on top of "extensive operating system capabilities and integrated information worker infrastructure that helps keep business information secure and accessible" (Microsoft, 2002). The business will now have a LAN that combines intranets and Internet sites (in the future). This will also increase system security, which is critical in a network. 2. Workstation Operating System Along with the Microsoft Windows 2003 Server, the installation of its Client on every workstation in the network will be implemented. The client also have the same reliability and functionality that would match modern computer applications. 3. Document Processing The installation of Microsoft Office 2003 that includes business solutions such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access. A complete package that would enable worker collaboration, file sharing that would increase workers productivity. Question 3: Comparative Traffic Flow Rates (to use the information I send to you by the "Estimating traffic volumes and patterns) Traffic Volume The proposed network will be divided into understandable segments. Using the White Box approach let us identify the 5 segments of the proposed networks with their estimated usage of various applications : (since the network currently do not have remote access, computations will be base on local traffic only) 1. Cable Belden Cat5e Twisted Pair Cable Supports up to 100Mbs transfer rates 24AWG solid category 5 cable with a PVC jacket. Metallic shielding Question 5: Topology Structures ( can you also fill more information by star ; bus; ring; tree topology) thank you !!! Physical topology refers to the configuration of cables, computers, and other peripherals. This is different from logical topology that is a method to pass information between workstations. Physical topology comes in different types such as Linear Bus, Star, Star-Wired Ring, Tree etc..To consider the best topology for the project we must consider the greater advantage of each one over the other. A Bus topology network compose of a single cable trunk. It looks like a daisy-chain that connects one workstation to the next. Network nodes share the same cable, and only single node can broadcast messages at a time. The bus topologies are also easy to install but a break in the trunk cable will disable the entire network. Ethernet is one of a bus topology network and it uses coaxial cable as its primary transmission media. The Linear Bus topology simple runs on a main cable with a terminator at both ends. File server, workstations and peripherals are all connected to a linear cable. Good examples are Ethernet and Local Talk. The only advantage of a Linear Bus is it only requires less cable length than the Star Topology. Star-wired ring topology may be mistaken as a Star topology in appearance but it differs from the wiring that permits data to flow from one device to another in a circle or a ring. The Tree topology is a combination of linear bus and star topologies. It's group star-configured workstations connected to a linear bus backbone cable. Tree topologies permit expansion of an existing network but the total length of cable is limited and if the backbone cable fails, the entire segment also fails. This is not to mention the difficulty in wiring and configuring than other network major topologies. In a tree topology each device is connected to its own port on a hub, just like the star topology. A tree or "star of stars" topology connect hubs in a pecking order, so one hub at the top of the ladder will hook up to more hubs, which will collapse off to clients and with even more hubs. Extremely lithe tree topology lets you append users by simply adding a hub. Centralized monitoring and administration makes it easier to organize a huge network or reconfigure it. Separating problems is easy, and if one node goes down with a problem, the rest of the network stays online and continue to exchange data. An broad tree topology will be more costly to manage than any of the prior topologies due to its magnitude and intricacy. If a hub cable or a hub crash, a segment of the network will go down. In Ring Topology each workstation on the network is linked to two other workstations, shaping a loop or ring. Data is transmitted around the loop in one route. Variance in the transmission of data is shun with token ring technology, which concede messages a "token" or authorization to send. Each workstation receives, regenerates and retransmits a token signal until it arrive at its destination. Ring topology afford constant networking for more than 10 users. Like the bus topologies, rings are easy and fairly reasonably priced to install. Response time on a ring is resolve by the number of workstations on the ring. Even if one connection fall short, the rest of the network will operate. The ring topology is an older technology with a small number of limitations. The ring is complicated to troubleshoot, because when one connection fails, it is hard to conclude where that glitch is. Reconfiguring a ring will shut down the network. In a Star Topology, which is highly recommended, the structured cabling system allows each workstation to be wired in a central point. This approach facilitates system interconnection and easy administration. This system permits attachment and communication of any network device anywhere. This approach also provides flexibility in using different media types to support multiple system performance requirements. Linked by Ethernet cables or UTP, the star is constructed around a central wiring device, it is called hub. The hub is a high-speed and competent device that broaden the potential of a plain cable. The hub construe and routes electrical signals using a high-speed bus. Workstations and server is linked individually to a port on the hub. When there is a need that your network have augmented stability and rapidity, the star topology is the best choice. Hub, gets you centralized administration and security control, small configuration costs and straightforward troubleshooting. One node fails, the rest of the network is still functional. There were known limitations such as possible network failures due to a hub cable breaking or probably the hub is failing. Question 6: Network Simulation Data (Open"shanghai". net net cracker file) Question 8: Proposed Network Installation Summary In anticipation of future expansion and to enable information applications and functionalities to provide access to the Internet from every workstations connected to the network. The Internet Protocols or TCP/IP as primary protocol will enable a wide variety of applications such as e-mails for faster customer sales and support communication. The use of TCP/IP will also ensure that all networked computers will have direct access to the vast range of existing information and resources on the Internet. With the proposed installation, the most advantageous topology was selected along with the selection of a high-end file server and workstations. Simulation of entire LAN operation using Netcracker Professional shows that the network is capable of handling large network traffic. Reliable software such as Server Operating Systems and office solutions were made part of the proposal to ensure the productivity of the completed network setup. Estimated costs of primary hardware were calculated to enable economic options and considerations.
