POEM CREATED AFTER READING EMILY DICKINSON The pageant poem under the “I Heard a Fly Buzz when I Died”, Captures all minds and melts every heart,While depicting the last moments of life, a dying person experiences,Dickinson portrays the colors of life, side by side the pains of death!During the last movements of life on earth,The dying person keeps an eye on everything around him, Even the most trivial ones like bee and fly,And on the most precious ones including blood relations and friends!

But he has to bid adieu to all the family members and companions,And has to say good-bye forever,To each and everything he belongs, he possesses,To start his long journey towards the world Hereinafter,With high hopes of meeting with the acquaintances, Who had left the world,Far before him, and dwell along with other human souls,He has to meet the angels and his departed loved ones,As well as the Lord of heavens, the Lord of Empyrean,To beg His pardon, and seek His love,For His countless creatures, both humans and dragons!

He has to leave the world for good,Relinquishing and surrendering all possessions and memories,The jewels of love he has gathered,The pearls of friendship he has collected,The gems of kindness he received as gift,The nuggets and diamonds he contained in him,From the vast ocean of long life on the earth!!!Though he is about to step down,From the vast and colorful stage of life,Yet he is eager to witness minutely,Each and every particle existing around him,Even the buzz of fly captures his attention,And disturbs his concentration to the great extent,And his attention diverts from the sweet and sour memories of past,To the time spent in the company of the loved ones,He is surrendering his physical strength,Yet the buzz of fly realizes him the fact,That life would continue forever and everAfter he has given up the ghost!!!

SHORT STORY AFTER READING “THE AWAKENING” BY KATE CHOPINIt was 2 O’ clock at mid-night, and there was peace and tranquility all around. Eve was trying to invite the sleep for many hours, but all in vain. At last, she decided to give up her struggle to sleep and got up from her comfy bed. She walked slowly on the marble flour and had a look at the face of her husband James, who was in the state of peaceful slumber, having least care of her young and good-looking wife. Eve walked out from her bedroom, closing the door behind her and sat in the courtyard under cool, calm and serene moonlight.

As soon as she absorbed herself in the bewitching moonlight, an idea floated in her mind, which compelled her go inside to bring the mobile set with her on return to the courtyard. She sat under the moon, and dialed a number and waited for the reply from the other side.“Hello”, (a polite male voice was there on the other side of the phone)Eve: (passionately) “Aloha Michael, my love, my sweetheart, my dream, my reality, how are you, and where are you….I fear lest I disturbed you from distracting you from your work, yes”?

Michael: (in a pleasant mood) “O no, never never my doll-like Eve, it is my pleasure that ye called me and remembered me even at late hours of night, when moon has spread its jubilance and mirth everywhere.”Eve: (hesitantly) “Yeah”… “Actually I felt loneliness, and remembered you a lot.”Michael: “Welcome my love, welcome. Where is he”?Eve: “Sleeping, as usual, no care of wife and home at all!”Michael: “OK, don’t get upset, he would be tired after full day job.”Eve: “(angrily) “What do you mean?

Have I spent the entire day in singing and dancing? Didn’t I toil the whole day working as a professional as well as in domestic chores?”Michael: (worriedly) “I didn’t mean that. I just want to say that sometimes man is so exhausted that he longs for rest in bed instead of talking and making fun.”Eve: “OK, but it is his routine to keep sleep as soon as he enters his house, which is not fair at all. When one has been blessed with a comely and handsome wife, why shouldn’t he enjoy while making love with her?

”Michael: “O yes, you are right, and I cannot declare it a justified act, but we have to make compromises in life my sweet lady.” Eve: (impatiently) “But why should I make all sacrifices and compromises in life? I want to lead a life full of thrill and action, I want to lead a life of my own my sweetheart, my love.”Michael: “That’s right, absolutely right; who is there to create hurdles in your way to make revelries? Hahaha…..”Eve: (in a bit shy tone) : “You; you are the only obstacle on my way….. Neither had you the courage to express your feelings before me, nor do you want to take me in the deep valleys of merry-making, you are just a selfish man.

” Michael: “If I am cell-fish (selfish), you are cell-frog.”Eve: (laughs out) “You are naughty.”Michael: “Thank you.”Eve: “So, come on and pick me in your car for some moments. I want to remain in your arms for some moments under moonlit night.”Michael: “OK… I am coming within twenty minutes my love.” Eve: “Please reach soon my love, waiting for you anxiously as flowers wait for the morning breeze.”Michael: “Till later, bye.”Eve: (in a romantic tone) “Bye bye my love, bye bye.

” (The communication ends over mobile phone)Eve (soliloquy): “I couldn’t understand my relationship with Michael; being James’s wife, it is not fair to get involved into emotional or physical relationship with any other man, but if husband is unable to pay due heed to his charming wife, then she has every right to have connection with some other, even beyond her marital-knot, in order to soothe her mental and physical demands; I am a young and graceful lady, after all….. (Pause) Eve: (again soliloquy) “How magnificently Michael admires my intellect, my imagination, my thoughts and my apparent charms, which James is unable to do.

I really feel gratification, satisfaction, pleasure and recreation while sitting with him, in his arms, making fun, laughing, chatting, kitting jokes and shares all woes and worries of my life. I have no conscience to prick me stop meeting to Michael, as he is my companion, my love and soul-mate; so, I will never consider it as a sin, and will satisfy my desires till he is with me.” (In the meantime, she receives Michael’s message, where he informs her regarding his arrival outside her home.

Hence, she gets up, looks herself in mirror, sprays perfume on her dresses and goes out to spend the most precious moments in the company of her “true love.”)PART IILiterature is the mirror of life as well as the reflection of norms, values, mores, activities and traditions prevailing in a society. It serves as a vast ocean that contains various streams, lakes, brooks and fountains of gorgeous colors in its fold. Poetry, drama, fiction, novel and essay are different colors of the rainbow of literature.

A refined piece of literature maintains the ability to skillfully portray the entire socio-cultural scenario in which that piece of literature is being produced. The same is the case with the novel “The Awakening” (1898) by Katherine Chopin. The class discussions on various forms of literature wide have opened new horizons of understanding and intellectual development to me. I got acquaintance with poetry, drama and fiction. Poetry is highly sublime way of expressing one’s imagination and thoughts in a precise but comprehensive manner.

It takes the readers in valleys and dales, in mountains and fountains, in jungles and deserts and close to the moon, the stars and clouds while going through few lines only. Similarly, drama elaborates the fluctuations of moods, expressions, refined thoughtfulness and comprehensive creativity that it possesses in its vast fold. In addition, a dramatist tries to bring to limelight the faults and flaws existing in society through his characters. Dialogues have special place in drama, which reveal the inner feelings of human nature, heart and mind as well.

During the discussion of literature, fiction fascinated me more than any other form of literature. Being the simplest and precise form of literature in prose, fiction focuses on protagonist and elaborates the nature of different humans living within one society and carrying divergent socioeconomic statuses. Same is applied while reading Chopin’s the Awakening, which shows difference between illusion and reality while drawing out the character sketches. Taking the example of the protagonist Edna Pontellier, apparently she is leading a contented and an ordered family life along with her husband and children, and cares for all the members of her family too, yet there is strong illusion that everything is alright in her end.

On the contrary, Edna has been involved in sexual relationship with two different men out of her wed-lock. Her husband does not look after Edna and children properly, and has concerns for his business activities only. Consequently, she seeks emotional relief in the person of Robert Lebrun, while looks for sexual satisfaction in the company of Alcee Arobin. Almost same is applied with other female characters i.e. Adele and Madame Reisz. The mother-women i.e. Adele is apparently chaste and pious, but in reality she is the pleasure seeking lady and satisfies her lust through voyeurism i.e. watching others secretly making love.

On the contrary, Reisz prohibits Edna from getting involved with Robert, though the same person is her regular visitor. The illusion and reality also make appearance in Dickinson’s poem “I Heard a Fly Buzz when I Died”, where perhaps there is no fly buzzing in the room of the dying person, yet she feels its presence as well as the sound of buzzing. Women make up half of the population of every society, and play very dominant part within a social set up. Being the central figure of her house, she is liable for the education and training of her children.

She offers her husband emotional and physical satisfaction along with keeping the house in perfect decorum. Being the basic unit of every society, family is very important for the progress of a society and nation as a whole. If children are given proper training, they will become useful citizens, and will be able to participate in nation building programs. If the family set up is in disarray, it would be very harmful for the society at large, and criminals, delinquents and offenders would be in abundance in society.

The same has been described in the fiction under study. Chopin’s novel “The Awakening” depicts the picture of three different women, where the heroine Edna Pontellier represents mentally dissatisfied house lady, who undergoes loneliness and negligence at the hands of her husband. Serious negligence of her husband has pushed her in a state, where she has decided to go astray as a reaction to the behavior of her husband. Similarly, since Madame is not married, yet she is working as a professional pianist.

But there can be seen vacuum in her personal life, which is due to her state of leading a single life.
