21st April According to the Test IAI, I am a versatile and highly innovative individual; if there is one thing I consider to be a constant element of my character is my passionate zest for everything and anything I attempt no matter how mundane. As a result, I can attribute my modest success in the social and intellectual arenas to my aggressive approach to life which is inspired by my passion and intrinsic motivation for all that I do. I also have a propensity for thinking outside the normal parameters, in fact I consider myself very liberal in my thinking. As a result, I like to come up with new ways of solving problems, and this often calls for innovation, as such I would like to think of myself as an innovative individual. However, sometimes I tend to go overboard and end up making matter worse with my “innovation” this is because I can get distracted and in my attempt to use new ways ignore old ones which may be better and more convenient. As I grew up, I was an avid reader of books and I often tried to practice some of the ideas I learnt in real life or to improve on them. For example, in junior high school, I along with 3 of my classmates won the annual science prize for coming up with a homemade solar powered lamp and water heater made from locally available materials including old disused solar panels. This attributes can be explained by my IEI, emotional intelligence test which were rated ENTP, this means I am a creative resourceful and broad minded individual quick on his feet and I can think about a wide range of issues objectively. New ideas exited me and I do not shy away from debating on any issue, since I have no inhibitions about offering my opinion accepting criticism or even giving some. In the IIC5 test, it emerged that I am a patient and strategic individual; I can spend hours on end mulling on a problem until I come up with a solution, as a result, I believe in looking for easier ways of carrying out tasks, but I do not cut corners or ignore protocol in for the sake of quick results. This is because to me it was worth taking time and effort to get good final result than to rush over cutting corners only to come up with substandard answers. This is an approach I have tried and tested over the years more so in my studies where I prefer to strategize patiently and always have a contingency plan in case the original one does not work. Despite this, I sometimes procrastinate and self-deceive that I am being patient while in reality am just avoiding to tackle a problem head on especially when I feel I may fail, this make me reluctant to take on hard tasks at once. The IIC5 test showed that I have a problem solving approach to conflict resolution; This is to a large extent trues since I deconstruct the problems in questions and to figure how it occurred why and how it can be resolved, thus I focus on details and specific facts as opposed to emotions or assumptions. While this is likely to take more time, I believe it is better to troubleshoot a problem patiently step by step than to rashly take emotive or unverified action. The IIIB4, test showed that I am very motivated to manage; manage things is intrinsic and it stems from the fact that when I manage, I have responsibility and control over whatever I am doing. Thus, I am accountable to myself, those under me and my superiors, I set realistic goals and ensure that I work as hard and smart as possible so I can also motivate my colleagues. According to the test ICI, I am motivated by challenges and friends; this is true because, the more challenging a task is, the more likely I am to pick it since it gives me a chance to test my knowledge and persistence. I am a competitive individual hence I often get inspired by my friends success to try and outdo or compete with them, I learn from their mistakes and achievements what to do and what not to do, in fact to me the best friend is one who can inspire and intellectually challenge me. In test IIB1, my leadership style showed I am concerned about the opinions of other people, I take an interest in their opinions and I listen and consider them so I can be able to pick the one I think is best. In the Test, IA3, I am not type A, while I have certain characteristic of a typical type A such as ambition and being proactive and honest, I rarely take on more than I can handle nor Am I short tempered or highly irritable. In the Test IIC1, I am not fully oriented to power, however I am not completely indifferent to it, as such I am in the halfway point. This is true because despite of the fact that I realize power in important, its pursuit is not my only driving force. Ultimately the tests, in my opinion, were to a large extent accurate, however not all of them showed a reflection of my true self since although they can give a general idea, there are myriad of variable that they cannot put into consideration since they are not flexible enough to consider all human scenarios and situations. After taking this course, I have come to realize that there are very may aspects of my life and the way I make decisions that, even I do not understand, this course was instrumental in helping me appreciate my strengths and face up to my weaknesses. As a result I came up with a plan that would guide me in improving myself so I can be a better manager, of both myself and others as well as improve my potential as a future employee. From the self-examinations in the first part of the essay, I believe in need to improve on my focus and objectivity when it comes to being innovative. I retrospect I have realized that I get distracted at time in the attempt to do things in a new way and end up wasting time or making matters worse by ignoring the obvious. To improve on this, I need to focus more on my preparedness and planning, before I set out to solve a problem, I should first consider all the existing methods and decide which one is best, also before trying something new, I will be considering its potential and comparing it to convectional techniques, thus should I find it is likely to be wasteful I do not use it. I also need to be more task focused so that I do not procrastinate; for this, the key is planning and prioritizing, to be able to manage situations which I would rather avoid or postpone. In future, I will manage this by breaking down complex tasks to make them look more like a series of simple tasks; this will make them more manageable and less intimidating. Nevertheless, I am aware that changing my character in such radical ways is not an easy job and I will undoubtedly be met my many obstacles. It has become over time a second nature for mine to deliberately try out new things and in some cases, it can be an obsession, dealing with this is going to be hard since I will often be forced to act against my instincts. Furthermore, my friends are used to this approach since despite the fact that it can at times cost me in time and resources; it is often very fulfilling and at times amusing. Thus the special attention I get from being the guy who does things his own way is going to reduce if I am to curb this tendency, I have grown used to that part of my identity. It will take a lot of effort and pragmatism to maintain my new approach, and I may have a hard time deciding when to and when not to go out of my way with new and novel ideas. Since I hope to be an efficient manager in the future, I can realize that I must start becoming that person now, to manage others, I must be able to first manage myself. Thus, I have outlined for myself several steps that I should follow so I can be an effective manager of myself and my potential career responsibility. The first one is to ensure I broaden my knowledge on my subjects of specialization by taking part courses in managements and personal development. I will also ensure I keep the company of individuals I deem successful and who I aspire to be like, having mentors will motivate and inspire me and they can advise me because of their various experiences. In addition, I will ensure I get experience through volunteer work, this way I can broaden my scope of knowledge and come to contact with practical issues on which to try out the theories learnt in class. I will constantly asses myself in each of the areas that I have set out to develop; I will regular tae tests so I can approximate the level of my growth. I will also ensure to ask those around me to give me their honest assessment, in the same way I self-examined herein to better understand myself; I will regally carry out an in-depth personal assessment by keeping a journal. That way, I can keep track of my progress and monitor it through comparing my past experience and actions with the present positions and thus I can determine if I am on track. Read More
