Smoking Abuse among Adolescent Introduction This research will fundamentally focus on addressing the smoking habits of adolescents and teenagers who are adopting a lifestyle of substance abuse. This topic is an important part of a framework that addresses important elements of community health nursing and the approach of providing Health Visiting (HV) to groups of people in society. Most young adults and teenagers tend to get involved in cigarette and smoking due to a strong sense of adventure and the curiosity to gain new experiences[Bri091]. In this essay, I will seek to utilise popular models and theories in social and behavioural analysis to design a public health campaign. This will formulate a process and system through which there will be an evaluation of the existing situation within a small geographical area in London and enable us to use various forms of health visits to analyse the situation and provide a solution to the problem. This process will involve the presentation of a communication model and a system for the promotion of a process that will detect smoking behaviours amongst teenagers and also help to educate these young people in order to avoid trying smoking in the first instance. Evidence indicates that many of the smoking habits happen from interactions between these teenagers and members of their peer groups as well as circumstances that occur in their homes[Khu12]. The project will seek to target these areas of the lives of smoking teenagers and provide solutions on how to deal with it. This will therefore combine important elements of social matters and psychological behaviours and trends in order to deal with issues and matters. This will help to provide an important and significant framework within which an appropriate model can be formulated to deal with the issue of smoking abuse amongst the youth. Public Health Education and Communication “Health education is any intentional activity that is designed to achieve health- or illness- related learning, i.e. some relatively permanent change in an individual’s capability or disposition. Effective health education may, thus, produce changes in knowledge and understanding or ways of thinking; it may influence or clarify values; it may bring about a shift in belief or attitude”[Ton11]. Therefore, health education is a fundamental system through which the views and fundamental mindset of some members of the society can be changed and/or modified in order to fit relevant aspects of the society. This includes the use of various consciously designed activities and processes that are to be carried out in order to deal with important matters in the society so that there could be major paradigm shifts in the society or community for the attainment of the best results. Health education is about the use of various empirical and systematic methods for the promotion of moral and ethical standards and principles that will be used to change the opinions and views of people within a given community[Cot10]. This implies that health education uses various approaches and tools to analyse situations and come with appropriate methods and processes for the presentation of recommendations for improvement in a given community. Background of Study Smoking is growing around the world and estimates show that there are no less than 400 million smokers around the world[Fre101]. However, tobacco use starts early in the lives of many people. From the 1970s, evidence has emerged that the number of adolescents involved in tobacco use and substance abuse has increased steadily over the years[Eld14]. This is fundamentally because many adolescents are introduced to the tobacco adverts which induce them[Khu99]. Others are also influenced by friends and other close relations who encourage them to abuse and misuse tobacco[Sch121]. Numerous factors cause young people to be introduced into the use of tobacco early in life. This includes various processes including the external environment and community within which these young people grow[Coo11]. In the UK, these processes vary according to the ethnic background of persons[Lan13]. Whereas smoking in most mainstream societies is higher amongst teenagers, the number of people who use tobacco in minority groups is quite lower and less likely to occur. However, in the UK, migrant children and migrant teenagers are being introduced to gangs and they are also being introduced to smoking[Coo11]. This implies that more vulnerable populations are being introduced and this includes mainstream members of the community who are traditionally targeted by advertising campaigns and other initiation processes and systems. The purpose of this project is to critically review and analyse elements of behaviour change in individuals and communities and apply it to the problem of smoking and tobacco usage amongst adolescents in inner-city communities in London. In order to attain this, the research will include the critical analysis and review of important behaviour and change theories and models in health promotion. This will culminate in the deconstruction of health promotion campaigns on smoking and tobacco usage and the application of these principles to a real-life issue and matter, relating to smoking amongst adolescents. The main end of this research his to develop a strategy and a theory for the evaluation of the behaviours of teenagers in the sample community, which is South London and also identify the best way of implementing and analyse the approach and plan that will be utilised in carrying out the new model. The main deliverable is to provide a conceptual model for health behaviour and the identification of a medical system and a medical approach that will be used to implement intervention measures aimed at getting teenagers to stay away from smoking and also get those who have gotten into the trap of smoking to quit early in life. This will help such persons to live apart from the traps of becoming so engulfed in the use and abuse of tobacco and the attainment of some habits that will make them continuously use and abuse drugs. This will be an intervention process that will help to mobilise different stakeholders and get them to work in order to attain the fundamental ends of the research and the study.
