DISABILITY AND REHABILITATION ASSIGNMENT A Journal Critique The objective of the paper is to present and analyze a particular research undertaken related to disability and rehabilitation. Specifically, the study is on the effect of physical training on the quality of life and oxygen consumption in patients with congestive heart failure (CHF). The critique is undertaken by analyzing the different phases of the research process and the presentation of the results. Title and Abstract The primary parts of the research presented are the title and the abstract. These parts need to present a view on the main contents of the research undertaken. The title specifically is the part that can identify the main focus of the study and even the methods used to arrive at the results which are stated in a single statement (Moher, Schulz and Altman, 2001). The title of the study presents the parameters that are included such as the quality of life (QoL) and the oxygen consumption of the CHF patients. These are used for the determination of the effect of physical training. Additional information specifically the method of research used e.g. randomization is important in the title. Another pertinent part that needs to give and overview of the research process undertaken is the abstract. It is comparable to a summary of the study presented in a manner similar to the organization of the paper itself. The indication of the parts in a structured abstract can be considered ideal on the basis of the readers’ ease in finding information (Moher, Schulz and Altman, 2001). The main aim is the assessment of the QoL and oxygen consumption to be able to gauge the effects of physical training to patients of CHF. The said parameters had been assessed through the study of a population of men with the condition referred to as ischaemic CHF which had been randomized into groups of different set ups with varying levels of physical training. Based on the said set-ups the study presented advantageous effects of physical training in the QoL which is equivalent to the well-being of patients both in the psychological and the physical aspects (Klocek, Kubinyi, Bacior, and Kaweeka-Jaszcz, 2005, p.323). Based on the standards, the paper under study can be considered ideal. The data had been categorized under the different parts specifically the aim, the materials and methods, the results and the conclusions (Klocek, Kubinyi, Bacior, and Kaweeka-Jaszcz, 2005, p.323). The information title regarding the method of data collection had been compensated by the inclusion in the abstract. Introduction The introduction is the initial phase in the formal presentation of the research results. For that matter it is important to be able to present the scientific context and the rationale of the research process undertaken. In the presentation, the descriptive format is sufficient specifically based on the fact that there are no defined rules in the presentation of the rationale and the explanations of the different processes undertaken throughout the research period (Moher, Schulz and Altman, 2001). In the study, the main rationale is the use of parameters such as the QoL and oxygen consumption in the determination of the effect of physical activity on the patient of ischaemic CHF. The study presented the definition of the concept included and required through the research process. One is the background information on the condition of congestive heart failure (CHF). It is a known cause of mortality and a physically limiting disorder. For that matter, the focus on the effects of physical activity is rational (Klocek, Kubinyi, Bacior, and Kaweeka-Jaszcz, 2005, p.323). Another part in the introduction presented is the definition and justification of the use of the parameters in the research process. By focusing on the quality of life (QoL), which is a basis for the success of the intervention in a variety of conditions, the advantageous and even the disadvantageous effects of the physical activities can be determined. There is a limit in the use of QoL though which had been stated in the paper, which is the fact that well-being of the patient can be considered as a secondary benefit and not an objective parameter. To resolve the said limitation, another parameter is used (Klocek, Kubinyi, Bacior, and Kaweeka-Jaszcz, 2005, p.323). The oxygen intake is an effective parameter in measuring the recovery of patients with CHF. Aside from the said reason, the said factor is used to determine the effect of physical activities to patients with different physically limiting conditions (p.324). In the study, there data were clearly presented. One area that is needed to be improved in the study is the clear presentation of evidences that point to the effectiveness of the said parameters for evaluation of the issue under study. Based on the standards presented, the justification of the problem is needed to be clear and organized in terms of the nature, the scope and the significance (Moher, Schulz and Altman, 2001). For that matter, the rationalization of the trials undertaken is needed to be presented. Lastly, the enumeration of specific objectives of the study is presented in the introduction. This has been observed in the study which presented two specific objectives. One is the determination of the change in QoL based on varying physical training and another is the determination of the reaction of the specific parts of the heart to the intervention (Klocek, Kubinyi, Bacior, and Kaweeka-Jaszcz, 2005, p.324). Methods The research is undertaken through a randomized control trial which can be considered as a required method in the determination of the efficacy of a certain intervention. There are different factors included in the analysis of the methodology of a research. Participants The participants of the study had been chosen through a particular set of eligibility criteria that indicate the required prerequisites to be able to be included in the trial. Random assignment into different set-ups maintains the internal validity of the study (Moher, Schulz and Altman, 2001). One of eligibility criteria is having ischaemic CHF lasting 3.1 + 1.0 years in relation to the study with the last check up within the month of the onset of the research. Other eligibility criteria are related demographic information such as age ( Read More
