Extract of sample "The Structure of American Democracy"

Social contract theory tries to explain how states form to maintain social order. It is sort of like an agreement between the individual and society at large. The idea is a person gives up certain personal freedoms in order to enjoy the benefits of an ordered society. This idea has affected the structure of American democracy in that the contract itself has become so compulsory that it might better be termed an ultimatum. The word contract implies choice, and people in America have no real choice in how much they participate in societal trends.

Alexis de Tocqueville noted that American democracy is dangerous because majority rule quells dissenting voices as an unstoppable megalith.
