Extract of sample "Enterprise Resource Planning"

An example of this is the efficient allocation of the budget which is very significant with the current economic situation. Professionally, the concepts of ERP and SCM should always be considered in any activity noting the profit-maximizing goal of the firm. Thus, each employee should see to it that all resources should be put into best use. The most interesting lesson for the week is JIT and lean operations. I am really amazed by these concepts in operations management. I have always wondered why Dell Inc does not have retail distributors for their products.

I thought it might have been just easy for them to stock their products and wait for walk-in customers to buy. However, with the discussion, I have appreciated this strategy of JIT where products are manufactured as they are ordered by customers. It really is amazing how Dell is able to eliminate unwanted costs, make production more efficient, and shorten production time through this technique. On the other hand, I can see the benefits as a customer. Through this strategy, I can order Dell notebooks online without having to dress up and drive to the nearest Circuit City (which are closing down because of the economic slowdown).

I can customize the laptop according to my needs and preferences and have it delivered in my doorstep. It's a win-win situation for the company and customers. This operations management strategy also allows Dell to be at the forefront of the me-economy where customers want to have a unique product that is specifically tailored for them. Through transacting directly with buyers, Dell is able to respond to each customer's needs. Now, I can see clearly the integration of marketing and operations management strategy.

The lesson truly enabled me to see the business organization as a whole, each department or area functioning towards the attainment of a single goal.
