The one condition for sustaining happiness in the city despises everything about morality in the society. The child is kept in poor conditions of cruelty and suffering, to ensure survival of the city. The city’s act is a clear indication of a society lacking morals. The author wants readers to ponder over a situation whereby a society claims to be happy and civilized but does so in the presence of a suffering child. There is no sense of morality in such a society. In many societies success comes from achievements made by the fortunate persons.

However, it is important to balance the fortunate and the misfortunate in the society. In the story, the narrator illustrates the theme that as great fortune follows a society, there is corresponding misfortune to balance the fortune. The utopian society balances it fortunes by oppressing an unfortunate child. The narrator uses pathos appeal and symbolism to develop a theme on societal morality and the balance between the fortunate and misfortunate in society. The author starts presenting the themes in the story by using pathos appeal the emotions of readers.

An appeal to readers’ emotions puts the readers in the perspective and context of the story thus, allowing readers to view and understand the theme and conflict presented. Fortunate members of the Omelas society lived luxurious lives. As the story unfolds, the narrator uses pathos appeal to make readers envy the happy and luxurious lives of the Omelas society. According to the narrator, “The horses wore no gear at all but a halter without bit. Their manes were braded with streamers of silver, gold, and green.

” The reader begins to envy the lifestyle of Omelas society. The Narrator continues, “Joyous! How is one to tell about joy? How describe the citizens of Omelas?
