Analysis of the Story People in the Parisian Migrant Slum Assignment #1: Plot is a very essential tool in literature. The plot in this story pushes us to read the story again and again so that we can get a glimpse of the subject matter. A proper plot is vital in creating the urge to read and know what is likely to happen next. Through the plot, the reader apprehends whether the story has a twist ending. Moreover, this fictitious story stresses on characters and how they engage in conflict. In most instances, stories have two types of settings: physical and chronological. Physical setting shows where the story is taking place while chronological answers the question “when?” is the story told. The author’s choice of where and when is the story told is very essential element in writing. Characterization is another significant element since it helps the reader to understand the types of individuals are the major characters. This fictitious story is great since it helps the reader understand the author’s brilliance in characterization of Momo or Mohammed, Madame Rosa, Monsieur Hamil, and all of the other children neighbors in the Parisian migrant slum. These characters make the reader want to know what happens next in the story, this is important. The author creates a real life situation since we are capable of evaluating the characters in relation to what they say, do, and what others say about other characters. In short, a fiction writer employs various fiction elements such as character, theme, setting, plot, point of view, and numerous kinds of imagery and idioms in developing the artistic effect in narrative. The above mentioned forms of fiction are called formal elements in literature. A proper understanding concerning the reserved elements is likely to boost the reader’s gratitude of any piece of fiction. These elements of fiction are very significant in improving the readers’ ability to share perceptions with others who have not read the novel. For example, the concept of setting of this novel helps a reader to recognize and discuss the significance of mother. The setting and proper plotting makes the reader to wear the shoes of Momo and other children and feel the impact of never seeing ones parents. While the list of fiction elements encourages us to divide a story into parts, the elements also helps in blending the story to create a whole. Yet, understanding the elements of fiction is very essential for most decisive discussions of fiction. This is because these elements provide fundamental terminologies that are importantly used in coincidence with many other decisive advances. Assignment #2  It is important for Momo to find the answer since he is in a quagmire as to whether Madame Rosa actually loved him or not. Monsieur Hamil finds it awkward for such a little boy to question him about love, however, he is forced to provide a “yes” answer in order to please Momo but ironically, Momo gets annoyed from that answer. 2. In this portion of the novel Momo changes in the sense that it appears that for quite some time he did not know his cultural identity. It also changes in regards to getting the knowledge that even Madame Rosa was not related to him in any way. He is not happy in this portion of the novel. 3. The narrator tells the reader that kids are heartless at the age when Madame Rosa taken care of them. Indeed, it implies that without Madame Rosa being heartless like these kids, she could have had difficulty staying with such many kids. In addition, Madame Rosa was heartless since she wanted every kid to lead a similar life to that she lived. Madame Rosa was must have been a whore at some time, and that is why she was comfortable taking care of the kids whose mother had gone to peddle their asses. By telling the kids that they are lucky and yet they don’t know their mothers, she was heartless, because a mother is the only person that is capable of taking good care of their kids. 4. At nine years of age, it could be difficult to justify Momo’s decision, however, according to the experience that Momo underwent through in his stay at Madame Rosa’s place, his decision is valid. Momo’s act of bringing another burden to Madame Rosa was likely to raise eyebrows. Madame Rosa was not likely to accept another burden since no one was going to send “money orders” for “Super.” She was also likely to have difficulty in feeding “Super.” I think Momo was just bright not to annoy Madame Rosa who has taken care of him for at least eight years. Selling or “giving” the dog to someone to someone who can take good care of the dog is sensible because the narrator indicates how passionate Momo was to “Super.” Momo had to give the dog away since Madame Rosa disregarded it and it was clear that the future security of “Super” was at stake at Madame Rosa’s place.  Madame Momo is scared to death because she feels that Momo has gone overboard. No one can sell what he/she loves and through the money in a sewer as if the dog did not mean anything to him. She is frightened because it seems that soon Momo will become unbearable, judged by his actions. It was also not easy to predict Momo’s next move or decision and that is why she had to take him to Katz. Madame Rosa was scared out of being anxious and that is why Katz found it appropriate to give her tranquilizers. 6. Momo’s artistic use of language brings out the message that he intends to deliver to readers. Artistic language also makes his work interesting to the extent that it become impossible to tell that the narrator is actually a kid. Momo misused words on several occasions, and this has really made the novel extremely interesting. The misuse of words also enhances the readability of the novel because it makes readers want to know more what is just about to happen. I found that the use of first person narrative was the best in telling such a story and I actually liked it. The reasons why I liked the use of first person narrative include being reader friendly, it’s also intimate, allows the writer to personalize the story, thus, adding the element of humor, and finally, the reader feels a sense of friendship with the characters. In fact, first person point of view is a comfortable point of view since it allows the writer to get right into the character’s head.  Madam Rosa assumes that given the fact that Momo is sensitive, he should know what is meant by Jewish hideaway. Madame Rosa also believes that they have been together for several years and somehow he knows that Madame Rosa is Jew. 8. The impression that Momo has towards Katz is that he is a man who can take good care of kids as compared to Madame Rosa. This is because, according to the manner in which Katz addresses the issue of him selling “Super” and throwing the money in a sewer, Katz understands situation and says that Momo is very sensitive. This implies that Momo sensed that Madame Rosa could not take good care of the dog in future because there will be no one to send money for the upkeep of “Super.” 9. When Dr. Katz says that, “diseases aren’t the hardest things to cure.” He is simply telling Madame Rosa not to fear the sensitive nature of Momo since he believes that at some point in life, Momo is going to change his behavior. Dr. Katz believes that Momo is simply growing up and in due process he is bound make several mistakes and annoys Madame Rosa, but this is something that Madame Rosa should not be afraid of because eventually the boy will chsnge his attitude (Garry 38). 10. Momo believes that crying can’t help anything and it is important to approach matter with a sober mind. The main reason why he said that crying is a goofy idea is that he believed that human beings are capable of faking a cry. This is why he says that human beings were designed to cry and crying is built in human beings (Garry 54). 11. After reading through the first fifty three pages of the novel, one realizes that the novel is full of emotions but the narrator uses the elements of fiction appropriately to deliver the message to the reader. Readers realize that the novel is full of sarcasm that accompany or erase the tears created by the emotions in the novel. The novel also acts as an encouragement tool to the narrator (Momo) since he finds himself in a state of quagmire; however, he capably deals with it succinctly. This is basically a story of transitions and advices students who are introduced to new things on how to deal with such situations. Assignment #3 Both Momo’s the first-person narrator of The Before Us, and Toni Cade Bombara’s narrator in her short story “The Lesson,” are considered as astonishing work of fiction since both narrators employ various artists employ the use of language properly, they both use humanistic themes accompanied by symbolism in a non-genre plot to express their suffering to the reader (Bambara 121). The effect that the readers get from both novels is that both the narrators have suffered. The first novel talks of a kid who has never seen his mother, a whore. The kid lives with a former whore who has the feeling that the kids must live in a better place and be taken care of. In this case, we can compare Momo and Madame Rosa to Silvia and Miss Moore. This is because both Miss Moore and Madame Rosa are geared towards helping the kids. Both Silvia and Momo use symbolism in as an element of fiction to make the reader understand their anger, and particularly, whatever they are going through. This is a situation that affects both the narrators, Momo and Silvia. In this case, the narrator is informed that life is a transitional process of both good things and bad ones. Both stories also give the reader a glimpse of the journey that both the narrators travel through, and their respective responsibilities. In fact, the tone of both stories is charming as the stories themselves. This is because in both the stories, the reader realizes that they both reach a turning point when both narrators question their caretakers concerning the issues of fairness.
