The study sufficiently reveals the need for inter-professional collaboration in assisting criminal system victims that are addicted to drugs and other substance. The human service professional must be aware of existing barriers and be ready to initiate collaboration to effectively meet client needs. Macy, Giattina, Parish, & Crosby (2010) in their article evaluate the challenges facing agencies dealing with domestic violence and sexual assault. The challenges were identified as norms, tension between professional providers and grassroots, sustainability, and funding among others and give a clear indication that victims never obtain comprehensive services to assist them deal with co-occurring mental illnesses.
As human service professionals, there is a need to pursue reachable and hospitable services for survivors while providing comprehensive services to domestic violence survivors with mental illnesses or addiction to substances and drugs. As a human service professional interested in assisting substance and drug addict, criminal offenders, the collaboration between the criminal justice system and agencies offering treatment for substance abuse is critical. It is through such collaboration that barriers such as fragmentation of the criminal justice system and poor coordination will be resolved.
Additionally, the collaboration will result in efficient application of integration strategies such as individualized treatment, case management, and connecting clients to other specialized and qualified service providers. Upon the attainment of collaboration, human services professionals will manage to deliver comprehensive services for surviving victims of domestic assault using substances and drugs. In my practice, I will use these research articles to guide my role in effective service delivery.
