Advertising Has Got Negative Influence to the Society Speaker 1: I totally support the fact that advertisements have bad influence to the society, Imagine an old lady compelled to buy a certain product because it is on television. Advertisements are so unfair to the poor and illiterate, majority tends to be vulnerable and that is how the end up buying expensive and unnecessary products, only to remain broke. Speaker 2: Stop just focusing on the poor or the old vulnerable people. The society also has the rich and literate people who appreciate the advertisements as they are informed on the current or new products in the market. Furthermore, advertisements are for willing people, nobody is forced to seek services or products in the adverts. Speaker 1: Some adverts promote prostitution or other bad habits and behaviors in the society. For instance we have seen innocent ladies trying the lifestyle of the models and artists they see on TV. Majority enter such life not knowing the consequences that could come with such. Take instance the adverts of women and female condoms, women explicit outfits and those with drugs meant for abortion among other unethical implications in the society. Young girls end up losing their virginity in tender age as they adopt such bad lives. Speaker 2: It is a fact that the society has the good and bad side. The people on the bad also have the rights to live their lives provided they don’t disturb those on the better side. Those companies making condoms, explicit dresses and drugs have the rights to market their products; because it is through that that they can increase their sales and contribute to the national and international economy (Sawyer, 347). Remember those companies have legal rights to make whatever they are making; it means that the legal entity is satisfied with such companies’ operations. And again, nobody is forced to purchase such products. Blame the purchaser not the seller or the adverts. Remember the adverts provide warnings so that the right audience can watch or hear the contents. Explicit adverts are aired at night when young society members are a sleep. The advertisement companies provide employment to the people despised in the society because of their habits. For instance, drunkards would be use to advertise alcoholic products and from here they can earn a living. The society would be boring if it only hade the good people. Speaker 1: Some adverts are misleading to the consumers and this is common with mobile phones, computers and tablets among other electronics. The adverts normally focus on the good side of the products leaving the consumers to face the bad sides once they purchase the products. It could be better if the consumer walks to the market or stores then seek for clarification, instead of relying on the misleading adverts. We have seen people buy expensive electronics only to return them after the first week. This is contributed by the advertisement. Speaker 2: Nobody, including you and me would focus on the negatives of a certain products when you are persuading someone to purchase it. It is logics and natural that one will always talk on the better sides of the products or services. Majority of the products advertised in the public televisions have underwent some tests and proven to be good for human consumption. And remember; nothing in this planet have the positives without the negatives. Such products could have their weaknesses but I am sure they come with warranty so that you can seek further help incase you notice a problem. Speaker 1: There are several advertisements for similar products until the consumers are confused which way to go. Imagine advertising over twenty products for the same purpose. The consumers will difficult time selecting the best, and he or she might end up choosing the most expensive and unsuitable. Advertising companies or agencies are always keen to use the best images, colors and even personalities in their adverts, to attract the consumers, but in real sense they never talk of the product itself. For instance, signing international figures like models, musicians or movie actors will drive people to try the product, even if the product is bogus. Speaker 2: A good consumer should not be moved by the images or the celebrity behind the advert and instead should do further research or inquiry about the product. Advertisement is to make the consumer know the products in the market. A wise consumer would then conduct further research through the internet, calling the relevant companies or outlets for further information, asking the people who have used the product on their opinion as far as the quality and reliability of the products are concerned. Some one should make the final decision after being satisfied with the product. Several companies accompany their adverts with free sample or test products so that the consumer can first have a feel of the product before buying it. This is common with companies making perfumes and lotions among others. I support the idea of advertisements because it opens our eyes and directs us towards the right product. Speaker 1: Some adverts compromise the health of teenagers in the society. Adverts of sugary and fatty snacks could mislead the teenagers among other young society members into consuming much of such products. This could encourage obesity among other diet complications. Young girls would tend to adopt the slimming products they see on the TVs without considering the consequences. Personalities behind the adverts are people the young people admire and they would anything to resemble them, only to suffer the consequences. Take for instance the advert of Heineken; the athletes in the adverts are international figures and role models to the young members of the society. School teenagers may be driven to consume the alcohol to resemble the athletes only to end up driving while drunk and causing unnecessary accidents. Young girls could also copy their role models and up with unwanted pregnancies or even contacting HIV virus. Speaker 2: For the first time you have convinced me. I agree with you, various adverts could mislead the young members of the society who tend to copy everything they see. Researches have proven that a good number of obese teenagers, consume large amounts of sugary and fatty foods from the drive by the adverts. They feel they must try everything they see in the internets and televisions among other media. However, there are a group of young members of the society who take advantage of the adverts to add values to their lives. It will be wrong to say that all teenager end up obese or pregnant due to the adverts. Once more, blame the victim and not the message. No company will force a teenager to buy the fatty and sugary food or the alcohol in that case. Furthermore, there is usually a warning message written on the product, for instance, the Heineken bottle is written, excessive consumption of alcohol is harmful to human health and the product should not be sold to the people below 18 years of age. The adverts are right and they help positive people get enlightened on the new products. Those who suffer do so because of their ignorance and not the message from the adverts. Speaker 1: I have been against the advertisement for along time but now I appreciate that despite the negatives associated with it, it also has its positives. I think it is upon the society to purchase a product because they are sure of its quality and not because they saw it on television. This will help us improve on our budgets by avoiding expensive and unnecessary products and services. Parents and guardians among other responsible adults should guide their children while following the message from the adverts. They should monitor their children as well and direct them on the correct life paths. Speaker 2: I am glad this debate has impacted some knowledge in your brain. Adverts are good, provided they pass the right information and the consumer take time to inquire on more of the products. Work cited Sawyer, Green. Business and its environment.
