Operant conditioning entails modifying behaviors via reinforcing/inhibiting the effects of their consequences. A punishment is termed to be positive when offenders are subjected to severe consequences when they go astray (Skinner, 1938).

Negative punishment mitigates the probability of a particular behavior being exhibited in the future. In order to modify the behavior, privileges are withdrawn (Skinner, 1938).

Effectiveness of corporal punishment

Factors that make the punishment effective include the promptness of administering, the severity of the punishment, and the rate at which the punishment is given. The possibility of strengthening the desired behavior or achieving an optional behavior (Cooper, et al, 2007).

Corporal punishment continues to generate a heated debate in the public about its effectiveness. Whereas proponents believe that it is the best way to instill discipline, researchers have disputed the claims. It has been established that it is ineffective and in the end affects the growth and development of children (Jones, 2014).
Corporal punishment should be when a child repeats the same mistake severally and should be limited. It is also prudent to warn them in advance about the type of punishment that they may experience to prepare them to await them psychologically (Jones, 2014).

How culture affects the kind of punishment

Culture may sometimes influence the results of corporal punishment. People have different attitudes about corporal punishment that is brought about by cultural practices. Interestingly, research finding indicates that the intensity of corporal punishment is administered according to cultural practices (Lansford, 2010).
Religion, ethnicity, and race are some of the cultural factors that are used to decide on the type of corporal punishment that is (Lansford, 2010).

Reasons for response

Corporal punishment is archaic and ineffective. It brings more harm than good. When frequently conducted, children become conditioned to it; their behavior remains the same or becomes worse (Jones, 2014).
