Situation Situation A 17 year-old student who was attending a Legal class was not wearing full school uniform. When the teacher questioned him as to why that was the case, the student became very angry and started arguing with the teacher. Then he started to walk towards the teacher, but instead turned to a wall and hit it so hard that he made a hole in it and his hand was hurt to the point of bleeding. Because he did not respond when the teacher asked him to leave, the student was escorted out of the classroom by one of his friends.
The student was then given medical care for his hand and his parents were announced that they had to keep him at home for a day, until the school decided what would be done about him. The school decided that the student needed to talk with the school psychologist. The parents and the student agreed to this. The psychologist looked for background information on the student and with this purpose he spoke about the student with his coordinator and teachers. The psychologist learned from them that the student was always angry and completely uninterested in the school activities, but without ever showing signs of disrespect to anybody.
Role of the provisional psychologist in that situation To obtain background information about the student. To obtain consent from the parents and from the student. To conduct interview with the student, in order to ascertain the cause of this outburst. To determine whether she herself could help the student or not. If not qualified to help, to recommend the student to somebody who could help. Situation requirements that the psychologist was able to meet To obtain background information about the student.
To obtain consent from the parents and from the student. To conduct interview with the student, in order to ascertain the cause of this outburst. The psychologist conducted the interview with the student and found out that he had been very upset lately because the girlfriend he had been with in the last 18 months had broken up with him. The student believed that he was meant to marry his ex-girlfriend. Apparently she had taken her decision to break up because of the jealousy shown by the student and due to her desire for freedom.
The psychologist found out that for four years now the student had taken over the role as head of the family from his deceased father and he felt responsible for his two little sisters. In the end the psychologist concluded that the student needed more help than he could get from her and took measures to his getting it urgently. In conclusion, the psychologist carried out all his duties appropriately. Situation requirements that were outside the provisional psychologist’s competence or expertise During the interview the student also declared that he remembered absolutely nothing of the incident from the Legal class (the argument, the hitting of the wall, the part where he hurt himself and was escorted from the classroom) and stated that this had not been the first time such a thing had happened to him, but the third one, all of them having occurred since he had broken up with his girlfriend.
He explained these episodes as results of the black magic done to him by his ex-girlfriend, which, besides the black-out parts, had caused him to hear voices in his head telling him to do bad things. Having heard this explanation, the psychologist began to believe that the student was beyond her professional help and in much need of urgent and more serious mental care, so she conducted Mental Statues
