The researcher states that in any situation where an unknown client calls asking for advice or treatment he would adhere to his standard procedure. This involves taking client details, including full name, contact details, date of birth and checking whether the client is already in the care of another health professional and giving assurances about confidentiality. Assuming these details were in order (i.e. within my treatment parameters of age, and whether there are any likely implications of interference with other treatments) the researcher would arrange a preliminary session.

The author would normally not offer hypnotherapy in cases where the client is clearly suffering from severe depression unless within a defined treatment plan guided by mental health specialists. If necessary, the researcher would obtain information and permission from the patient, in order to contact medical professionals involved in his or her care. During the preliminary session, the researcher would explain what kind of treatments he can offer, what hypnotherapy is all about, and what kind of patient is most likely to benefit from the author’s range of therapies.

The researcher would issue information and guidance in spoken and printed form during this initial session in which the client has a chance to view him, and he the client. The author would make it clear that this initial session does not mean that any commitment is entered into on either side but by the end of this initial meeting he would expect to come to an agreement with the client about whether or not a hypnotherapy program can be offered. At this initial meeting issues of entitlement/cost, etc would also be clarified, and a history of the client’s previous treatments for depression (if any) would be taken.

The author would use a questionnaire to guide him in choosing an appropriate program. After this, the researcher would design a series of anxiety management and self-worth sessions, tailored to the client’s needs.
