Genetic Experiments Introduction Genetics: Genetics is the study of modern sciences which provides information on how characteristics of parents are passed to their generation by genes. Genes are minor part of DNA which is found in our cells. DNA guides cells to produce protein which is needed in functioning of body. DNA is known to be a “blue print” which passes the characteristics and also some disorders or diseases from parents to their offspring (Lederberg 519) Genetic Experiments Science has modified in the field of genetics and now is able to find out various changes in people and their generations.
Science claims that these changes are due to genes which are present in our cells. In order to find out how these changes are made, scientists carry out various tests with the help of cells and genes (cancer.org 1). These tests are called genetic experiments. Many different tests in this regard are been carried out in order to enhance the study of genes. Science has modified and now they are even able to create a life in laboratory or even clone living things. Whether these kinds of tests and experiments should be done or not, is an altogether a very argumentative topic thus people across the world have different views regarding it where some believe that there is no harm in it on the other hand others believe it to be prohibited.
The study discusses the three common and controversial experiments ahead (Lederberg 519) Creation of Human Life Dr. Craig Venter and his team conducted an experiment in which they created an entirely new chromosome with the help of non-natural DNA which was made from chemicals. They transmitted this DNA in to a cell and observed that it was multiplying giving a real life evidence of it to be alive. This experiment was questioned by various scientists and Professors of various fields. Professor Julian Savulescu claimed that Dr Craig was leading towards the function of God by creating a non natural life (Macrae 1).
On the other hand Dr David King argued that it’s an act of having control above nature which was portrayed as “playing God” by many people. Dr Craig claimed in answer to the arguments that science needs to progress in order to bring betterment in our lives (Macrae 1). He also shared that science is also looking forward to propose an algae that can incarcerate carbon dioxide and produce new hydrocarbons that could go into processing plants. Thus he found no harm in creation of this life because he believed that science should go ahead with all possible testing for betterment of human life (probe.org 1) Creating Stem Cells Stem cell is an undeveloped cell that has the ability to specialize into various kinds of cells in the body.
Embryonic stem cell and the adult stem cells are the two kinds of stem cells. Cells which are generated at the time of division of fertilized egg are called embryonic cells which can change into any kind of cell in the body whereas adult cells are a kind of repairing cells which are continuously dividing in order to take place of the cells which die. These are found in the tissues of muscles, brain and blood etc. Stem cells are useful in the recovery of many diseases such as some blood disorders, tumors, lymphoma and leukemia (ama-assn.org 1). As these cells are used in the cure of many diseases therefore scientists experimented to create these cells in the laboratory in order to be easily accessible.
Still scientists face few hurdles in this regard because multi-cellular embryonic cells. The stem cell research has been argumentative because the creation of these cells in the laboratory requires cells that are taken out from the organs or tissues of human bodies. At the same time it has been used in the cure of deathful diseases such as repairing of tissues after heart attack and bone marrow transplants etc (aproundtable.org 1) Human Cloning First ever cloned living being was a sheep named “Dolly” which was cloned by Scottish scientists from the cells of another sheep.
Human Cloning is the process of creating genetically the same replica of a human being. This is the most controversial issue in the field of Ethics because it is the creation of non natural human being thus known as the interference in God’s task. Beside birth defects were highly observed in the cloned beings. It is also argued that cloning would encourage the rich people to create children who are of their choices which are unethical. But the purpose of cloning is the treatment of many diseases such as Alzheimer’s.
Cloning allows removing the genetic disorders or genetically transmitted diseases allowing people to give birth to healthy human beings (bu.edu 1) Conclusion Therefore, after viewing the argumentative discussion on the genetic testing, the paper suggests, despite of all the claims, these kinds of experiments are not harmful and these should be permitted all over in order to cure the deathful diseases and non favorable conditions in human life. The claim that Genetic experimenting is “playing God” becomes void when we observe the use of vaccines, medicines or operations for the cure of certain health issues because even that is a non natural way of extending one’s life (bu.edu 1). Thus, Genetic experiments do not seem to be offensive because it’s a part of science in order to make this world a healthier place to live.
