Based on the article, the Hawthorne effect works like an investment in the workforce. When people are given what they need such as proper compensation, workload, and even trust, they are bound to produce better results which then serve as rewards to the organization or company (Accel, 2010).
Based on the data presented by the article, the Hawthorne effect can be considered as an observable positive effect due to the attention given by superiors or researchers. There are underlying issues in such cases. Due to the probability of a Hawthorne effect, the credibility of the results of the study decreases. In an analysis of the Hawthorcasesffect and the empirical research undertaken in Hawthorn Works of the Western Electric Company, there are factors questionable in the research (Adaira, 1984).
One significant observation is related to the procedure undertaken. There are problems with the variables involved in the study. Basically, defining the variables in a study is the most important part of the procedure. But due to the lack of a clear definition of the Defininge Hawthorne effect study, the results are considered questionable. This is the main reason why Hawthe thorne effect became a concept of overestimated results. The study then conducted by Adaira presented ways and means to improve on the results and lessen the doubt in cases wherein there are perceived overestimation of results or effects considered unrealistically positive (1984).
Another study presented a radical criticism of the Hawthorne effect. According to Carey, there are discrepancies between the evidence in the study and the conclusions presented. The evidence showed the effects of rewards specifically financial can improve work morale and behavior. The conclusions on the other evidenced an improvement in the work output due to the attention given to the management specifically in the mucmuch-neededeaks between work hours. The said study pointed out the lack of evidence related to the conclusion (Carey, 1967).
Although the Hawthorne effect has created a negative influence in the field of research, there are groups who had taken its side such as the research conducted by Jones (1992). Based on the article, and the empirical evidence some groups have the original data from the Hawthorne Relay Assembly Test Room, as well as different forms of manipulations and combinations of variables. The study concluded that the conclusions can be considered valid and that there is slim or no evidence of the Hawthorne effect itself (Jones, 1992).
This result is interesting since the term “Hawthorn effect” had been used to describe a research ch result that was overestimated or inaccurate. The article presented by Accel (2010) is an explanation of a possible application of the Hawthorne effect. The term though can now be applied to the different fields of research wherein the conclusions are not supported by the evidence specifically in empirical studies. Addition discussion was then undertaken on the original Hawthorne experiment and the crievidenceat had been thrown at the said research through the years. These criticisms include the overestimation of results and the lack of evidence supporting the conclusions.
