Nurse Practitioner graduates have not only the essential skills, and knowledge but also the abilities which equip them for independent clinical practice. There are a total of 9 core competencies all of which are gained through patient care experiences that focus on independent and interprofessional practice. There is also a key role played by analytic skills which help evaluate and provide evidence-based patient-centric care; furthermore, advanced knowledge facilitates operations being performed in the health care delivery system. The 9 core competencies that an NP graduate must possess are; the scientific foundation competencies which revolve around an integration of research, theory, and practice knowledge. Then there are leadership competencies, which focus on advanced leadership roles that facilitate and guide change. Next, there are quality competencies that strive to improve the quality of the clinical practice provided. This is followed by Practice inquiry competencies, which translate new knowledge into practice. Technology and information literacy competencies and policy competencies are also imperative capabilities that an NP graduate must possess. Health delivery system competencies, which focus on minimizing any risk to patients at an individual and systems level, are also highlighted by the NONPF. The last two competencies are the ethical competencies and the Independent practice competencies.
