SOLUTIONS FOR E WASTE Solutions for E Waste Did you know that there is approximately 40 million tonnes of e waste generated each year worldwide? Additionally, studies show that e waste is the fastest growing waste stream with a growth rate of about 4% each year (Lundgren, 2012, p.11). This can be attributed to the increasing demand for electronic products globally. For example, electronic market in developing countries in the recent years has had a significant increment especially with the increased internet usage.

Moreover, there is increased demand for improved electrical and electronic equipment in developed countries especially due to production of highly obsolete products. Electric equipment being produced have a limited life span with studies showing approximately eighteen months life span for most electronics. Increased e waste levels imply increased risks on the environment in relation to pollution. With these high rates of e waste there is pressing need for solutions to reduce levels of e waste production.

Some of the solutions include recycling, donation, and innovation among others. In response to increasing e waste levels, there are suggestions on more concentration on recycling. Recycling entails taking electronics that have no use to the recycling centers for recycle. Most countries around the world have recycling centers where people can take their unused electronics. However, it is important to make sure that these recycling centers have the required mechanisms to effectively carry out their task.

This requires recycling in environmentally friendly mechanisms to avoid pollution. For example, burning waste products openly is not advised due to high level of fume production. Effective recycling may involve refurbishing the unwanted electronics for reuse or breaking them down to commodity level where they can be used as raw materials. To ensure appropriate recycling processes stakeholders such as the government can come up with appropriate regulations ensuring that the recycling centers have the effective mechanisms to carry out environmentally friendly recycling.

With environmental friendly recycling, e waste management is bound to become simpler and more effective hence reducing pollution.Additionally, e waste can be managed by donating unused equipment to people and or facilities with the need for the equipment. For example, electronics can be donated to a local family, school, and or training centers in need of the equipment. In almost every locality there are people without the abilities to regularly upgrade their electrical equipment hence are in need of some of the unwanted equipment.

On a global scale there has been efforts with some developed countries exporting unused equipment to developing countries. However, such international solutions should be done under strict monitoring and regulations to avoid pilling up e waste in developing countries (Lepawsky and McNabb, 2010). For example, there should be a strict procedure governing shipment of e waste with focus on both the donor country and receiver country. Receiving countries should have effective solutions for the equipment once they are unwanted.

Conversely, donor countries should have regulations on amount of equipment shipped and also functionality such that already malfunctioned equipment are not shipped. However, this is seemingly a temporary solution and is seemingly dependent on recycling among other waste management solutions ate some point. Innovation is seemingly the most effective mechanism for managing e waste and reducing environmental pollution. In this context, innovation refers to efforts by production companies to produce equipment with longer life spans.

Creating products with a longer life span will reduce e waste levels making it easier to manage the little waste being produced. For example, production companies can create repairable equipment such as replacement a single piece of the equipment in case of malfunction. This implies that only the malfunctioned piece will be considered waste rather than the entire equipment. Additionally, production companies can concentrate on creating equipment with durable hardware that can host different software.

As a result the focus will be on upgrading the software rather than the hardware of the equipment hence eliminating e waste. With this in mind people can take the same equipment for software upgrades to suit advancements in technology without necessarily having to discard the equipment in entirety. In conclusion, all the solutions may are seemingly interdependent hence no one solution can be selected to deal with e waste problem in totality. For example. Donation is still dependent on recycling since the equipment is bound to be unwanted at some point.

Additionally, innovation is also dependent on recycling since the discarded pieces of equipment need to be dealt with in a manner that is environmental friendly. However, innovation is seemingly the best way of dealing with e waste since it greatly cuts levels of e waste production.
