The example (proof) is provided in verses 4-13. Verses 14 through 32 are the exhortations based on the proof. The linguistic structure is focused on action. Walk, lay aside and put on are statements geared toward action. The Christian is not told to contemplate the Glory of God, but rather to act in specific ways. A changed heart results in changed behavior and Paul laid out specific behavioral standards. Verse 23 and 24 sum it up: “that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and put on the new self, which in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth.

” How is the mind to be renewed? By changing the behavior and focusing on Christ. The contrast is made, the choice is given. Christians are to choose righteousness, and that righteousness must be apparent in the day-to-day activity. (4)Interpretation:(1)-Chapter 4 of Ephesians is largely a doctrinal standard of behavior. The example of Christ is pointed to and the Christian is exhorted to take specific action. Lay aside the old, put on the new, and be renewed in the spirit of your mind.

Specifically, Paul deals with the tongue and how Christians are to control their speech. “laying aside falsehood… Speak Truth… let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth…” Looking back, one sees the old life of darkness, lies and sin. Looking forward one sees the new life in Christ which is clothed in righteous action. Christianity is characterized by behavioral action. (6)Summarize- We are to walk in a manner worthy of the tremendous sacrifice that was made on your behalf.

With humility and gentleness, laying aside falsehood; we are to let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor and malice be stripped from us as we treat others with kindness and forgiveness.
