"Implementation of a PACS System" is a great example of a paper on the health system. Careful planning is the key factor for the successful implementation of Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS) in a hospital. Definitely, cost estimation must be taken into consideration for proper budget allocation, especially for a mid-sized hospital. To estimate the cost, an in-depth assessment of existing equipment related to the operation of the PACS system must be performed to determine whether there is current equipment that can still be used, which one needs replacement, and what other equipment need to be purchased. As PACS administrator Scott Griffin commented, that “this may include complete replacement of key computers, as well as upgrades to memory and monitors throughout the facility.”(“PACS Administrator Scott Griffin on the Secrets”, n.d., para.10) So, a prudent action of designating a project administrator must be done to perform this task and the upcoming steps of implementing the PACS system

            After the assessment of current equipment, the administrator may now contact the appropriate vendor which is not just a supplier but also a cooperative consultant. Regarding vendor’s performance, Anne Hengen, Intelerad's Professional Services Manager, remarked in her article entitled “Steps to PACS implementation” that “choosing a vendor that performs careful project planning and has an experienced professional services team is a key component for PACS implementation and installation success.” This same article presented a set of standard key stages for a typical PACS implementation. Such are: pre-installation planning; Site preparation, PACS Software installation;  PACS Commissioning and Training; PACS launch; PACS Acceptance by the client; Client Handover to PACS Support Team and Account Manager for ongoing customer service and support. Yet, above all these stages, there must always be coordination between the project administrator and the project team of the vendor. In her concluding remark, she stated “that project management and training are key determinants to the outcome of PACS installation.” (Hengen, 2007, paras.2,6,19)

            Regarding the staff to be trained, an article of “Radiology Administrator's Compliance and Reimbursement Insider” (2006) suggested that the administrator must form a PACS committee consisting of supervisors, radiologists, technologists, administration, and information technology (IT) support staff, that will be responsible for the operation and troubleshooting. (Form committees and continue to meet section, para.30) The article also suggested that make sure to designate the best people for the position regardless of background. (Diffuse territory battles section, para.32) Additionally, their training must include the following issues: network, software, computers, operational workflow, applications, quality control troubleshooting, and security.
