Extract of sample "Innocent Voices in El Salvador"

Chava falls in love with Cristina Maria, his classmate. Guerrillas’ attack on the army closes the school. Kella takes the family to a safer place. Army takes Chava and his friends to an unknown place that is seemingly an execution ground. The Salvadoran army starts shooting the boys, killing two. On Chava’s turn, a guerrilla attacks and saves him from being killed. A government soldier kills the guerrilla. Chava takes a rifle but finds out that the government soldier he is about to kill is his friend from school.

Chava flees and runs to his home, but finds his mother in the house’s burnt-out ruins. In an attempt to save Chava from being caught by the authorities, Kella decides to send her son to the US. Chava promises that he would return and save his brother from being recruited into the army when he turns twelve. Six years later, Chava comes back and finds Cristina Maria alive.
