New York, NY: Routledge ISBN:9780415181075 In his book, Peter Hartley describes the framework for communication and the processes that people go through in order to develop proper skills when dealing with each other. He specifically highlights psychological groups where the people present identify each other as belonging in it and have the same psychological effects to each other. A psychological groups has; interaction, perceptions, norms, roles, emotional relationships and common goals.

They can b in form of family groups, friendship groups or workgroups. In order for a group to come to maturity it has got to pass through various stages of development i.e. Forming, Storming, Norming and eventually Performing even though not all kinds of teams go through the stages in the same order. When dealing with an intergroup communication, there has to be a willingness of both leaders and members to come to an understanding that all teams are unique and therefore have to design a mode of communication between and within each others groups.

Communication can be used to bridge intergroup barriers with the representatives avoiding a win-lose situation by properly clarifying the uniqueness and defining the roles and position in any negotiations.
