Agile methods for web development Findings from the interviews Interviews were conducted to gather the opinions and experiences of users of agile webdevelopment. The purpose was therefore to ascertain the potential, usefulness and advantages of agile methods for web development projects. This research could then help to better understand the current status of the usage project managers of successful and unsuccessful web projects and their intention for future usage. A total of thirteen interviews took place altogether, at five universities in Saudi Arabia involved in web development projects. The participation was anonymous. The questions used in the interviews were semi-structured. The first part of the interview consisting of six questions involved gathering some demographic data of the subjects. Some of this data is summarised in the table below. Personal names and the departments they work in are not included. This was followed by the further questions directly related to the purpose. Gender Age Home town University Interviewee 1 Male 39 Jeddah King Abdul Aziz University Interviewee 2 Male - Jeddah King Abdul Aziz University Interviewee 3 Interviewee 4 Findings from interviewee 1 The actual responses from the first interview are contained in Appendix B1. A summary follows. The department at King Abdul Aziz University began offering rich educational resources in multiple media for both real-time and asynchronous communication between instructors and learners nearly five years ago. Their distance education students receive the same, and their academic programmes are full of activities, animations and simulations. Student participation takes place through online discussions and group assignments and the material is available all the time from anywhere at their own convenience. The deanship is actively involved in research projects to ascertain student levels and satisfaction, and feedback ensures continuous improvement. Experiences are also shared with other institutions to develop collaboration and learn new things. The department’s objectives and goal is to “effectively contribute and support scientific development witnessed by the kingdom in general and King Abdulaziz University in particular”. Thirteen services are listed under the departmental contributions, which include (but are not limited to) the following: Provision of technical services Supervision of software programs and database Maintenance and monitoring of distance learning systems Updating software programs for raising the efficiency of educational processes The web applications in use by the department are an e-learning management electronic system (EMES), a virtual classroom system called CENTRA, the KAU electronic exam system and mobile learning. EMES is an integrated computer system for managing the educational process and facilitate interaction between students and faculty members. The CENTRA allows for instructors and students to participate in real time lessons and discussions with the aim to improve students’ learning experience. It is accessible via the Internet 24/7, and during the sessions, all tools are accessible at the discretion of the instructors such as questioning, drawing and participation. The KAU electronic exam is designed to provide an interactive experience for periodic tests and end of semester exams. The material is motivating and provides accurate data. It assesses achievement and provides reliable data. KAU also has plans to introduce mobile learning for mobile phones to enable to students to learn at their convenience. The method used for managing web projects is PMP. The website is updated whenever the need arises or new events occur and a link is available on the site to measure user satisfaction. The interviewee among a web development group used these methods. Its advantages are that everything is clear and there is a big documentation. As far as using agile methods is concerned, the interviewee had used it over a year ago but did not have much information about it and was not sure which kind of agile method was used. It was used for only one month however, because the department likes to change the method but without affecting its work. It was also found to be flexible and with less documentation than PMP. Although no software was used, a manual board was used for each project with many cards for each task and employee. Due to the lack of documentation, a loss of time was experienced causing a delay. The agile method thus made the department fail to achieve its objectives. Findings from interviewee 2 The actual responses from the second interview are contained in Appendix B2. A summary follows. The department was established in 1976. It is focused on improving the efficiency of the educational process through e-services and a delivery enhancement mechanism for supporting inter and intra departmental communication. There is a provision of technical consultancy, necessary tools for enabling all departments to take advantage of the existing network, automation of the internal administrative processes, and the development of a campus-wide LAN. There are also various deanship managements such as for administrative and technical affairs, and software, customer services, information security and quality management. The department’s aims are to improve the quality of electronic services in academic and administrative areas, and to coordinate with other departments in providing e-services for achieving and meeting its desired goals. It provides the latest software, services, consultancy and technical studies for all sectors, and is keen to develop a communication mechanism between them as well as technical support. This includes gate control, the university portal, and all sites and systems based on quality standards. The department provides all the electronic services through the site, which includes access to all the information needed by visitors and to facilitate interaction between users and site management applications. A team of supervisors also provides news on a daily basis. The management objectives also include training all sectors to use the portal, monitoring implementation of the global standards for all sites and systems emerging from the gate, its aesthetic design, and to provide a unified password entry-level system. The management functions include service site creation and creation of sites for faculty members. The interviewee is directly responsible for web development and service site creation for other deanship and doctor or teacher. At present, the PMP method is used for managing the projects. The website is updated as the need arises or when new events occur. A link is provided for measuring user satisfaction. However, there was no knowledge of who decided to adopt this method, its advantages and how to measure its effectiveness. Agile methods had not been used beforehand so no further comment could be made concerning agile methods.
