People, Power, and Politics in Canada Analysis of Some Reforms of a National Institution(s) Responsible for Managing Regional/ Intergovernmental Relations in Canada Institutions responsible for managing intergovernmental relations like the Cabinet; the Senate and various federal transfer programs need certain reforms. The reforms are meant to change their structure and make them suitable for all the citizens. The reforms also need to target mainly at improving the political, economic as well as social status of the country. The targeted reforms include areas like democracy, elections and campaign finance reforms (Robert & Doreen, 2009). The reforms that the government bodies predominantly need include the reforms on democracy, electoral reforms, and campaigning finance reforms. McRoberts’ Concept of Asymmetrical Federalism as a Means of Addressing Quebec Nationalism McRobert profoundly disagrees with Trudeau, who offered to get rid of the villagers in Canada outside Quebec. In the process, they left the poor and the local people in the worst and most pathetic conditions. McRobert disagrees stating that before Trudeau came into the lime light, there was a veritable ambiguity about the Canadian deal. He says Trudeau never improved the asymmetrical arrangements for the Quebec in any way. He claims that Trudeau ruined Quebec social economic status. Democracy Reforms Democracy is a fundamental aspect in every state. The people defined it as the rule for the people and with the people. The perception that ordinary citizens have about the government and those who are in should substantially change (Robert & Doreen, 2009). With these reforms in place, various parties will conduct themselves in a good manner. It will also provide an opportunity for people to select their preferred leaders. In most cases, people often evade engaging in the government-initiated processes like elections since they believe that it is a waste of time. Therefore, the basic advantage of these reforms will be to enable different citizens to exercise their legal rights. Common citizens will also be free to compete for various political posts in the government. Whether these are federal, senate, or other elective posts, democracy is a very crucial aspect and warrants priority. Election Reforms The electoral reforms are also necessary as they determine the mode of carrying out elections. This implies that people competing for various positions need to have guidelines to aid them. The electoral body should be selected wisely and democratically to ensure free and fair elections. The political parties also need to have policies governing the manner by which campaigns are done. The reforms of elections also need to touch on areas like setting the exact date for the elections as well as appointing watchdogs to oversee the entire process (Robert & Doreen, 2009). The electoral body should also train and enlighten individuals as for the importance of carrying out elections. The electoral reforms should touch on various aspects like the number of women to be elected to the Senate seats. This will ensure fairness in the state elections and the members elected will be those that will improve the lives of the citizens. Campaign Finance Reforms Campaign finance reforms are ones of the most influential reform type needed. They are extremely valuable for the nation because they can regulate campaigns. These reforms also dictate the sources of resources for people to use during elections. These reforms will also assist candidates wishing to vie for electoral seats to prepare adequately for the process. Such reforms will also open more room for people wishing to vie for the elective posts to do so in a simple way. A Strategy to Improve the Number of Women Being Elected to the House of Commons in Canada Increasing the number of women in the House of Commons is a factor that has been debated for an exceptionally long period. As it has been a cultural pattern, women rarely get chances to vie for high elective posts. Therefore, the best strategy to increase women reps in the House of Commons involves a series of actions. First, there has to be changes in party leadership. People endowed with the electoral process in various parties need to be people who offer equal opportunities to every man and woman. Such people need to recognize women as having the capability to lead, hence, help them in their campaigns (Robert & Doreen, 2009). Similarly, such people should encourage the public to vote for women since they represent elements of change too. Consequently, the government should consider the emergence of new parties. Women who have a strong influence of the public should preferably head such parties. Such influence will help them during their campaigns and during their political air wars. They should run their campaigns with strong opinions on matters of development. The political parties also need to increase the number of turnover of their members. The parties need to support their members to come out and vote for them. Since people always determine the number of votes, a good turnout will ensure that people vote in large numbers, hence bring women into these positions. The final part of this strategy involves improving the election rules. The rules regulating the sources of finance for the people vying for various electoral posts need to favor women. It should offer equal opportunities to all these parties to help them get some adequate finances to help them in their campaigns. If this strategy is well planned and implemented, it will result into significant outcomes. Women like other citizens ought to be viewed as instruments of change and need to be selected in the House of Commons. Many women have an immense potential and can make considerable changes to the nation if given a chance. The Canadian Government’s Position Towards Iran: an Expression of Liberal Internationalism or Realism? The Canadian government position towards Iran is rather foul. The conflict between the two countries began in 2012 when Iran suddenly changed its views on various issues. Such were the cases when Iran changed its foreign policy and declared support of the government of Syria. They also pledge the support for the violation of human rights. This implied that they no longer cared whether people got their rights or not. Moreover, they brewed threats towards Israel, which is one of the great allies of Canada. When Iran unveiled their nuclear program, Canadians had to withdraw their support and relationship with Iran. Because of these changes, Canada feared for the security of its diplomats who lived in Iran. This forced Canada to withdraw them and close the embassy in Tehran (Robert & Doreen, 2009). Canada also broke all the ties with the Iranian government and then expelled all the Iranian diplomats who were in Canada. The act of the Canadian government is poor idealism. This is attributed to the fact that all the allegations against Iran were on the factual basis. This, therefore, created conditions that could not allow good and mutual relationships between the governments of the two countries. In fact, in one occasion; the Canadian Prime Minister described the Iranian government as a potent threat and danger to them. In addition, he cites that the Iranian regime stands for serious danger and division. References Robert, J., & Doreen, J. (2009). Politics in Canada: Culture, institutions and public policy.
