After reading several articles tackling Nevada’s history, I have realized the importance of living in a moral society. For me, a society is to be considered moral if it comprises members who faithfully observe moral precepts. These doctrines promote a clean and decent living. In this instance, it is to be expected that people avoid doing things that could degrade the value of human beings and destroy the very foundation of society.
Of all the events making up the history of Nevada, there is one specific circumstance that I would like to change. This pertains to the stage when Nevada legalized gambling and prostitution. The legalization of these two immoral acts actually happened after the first world war in 1918 (“Guide”). The commercially oriented society in Nevada had opened the way to many immoral jobs. Its two major cities namely Reno and Las Vegas featured legalized prostitution, illegal gambling, the sale of alcoholic beverages, and easy divorces (“Guide”). All these aforementioned features were against the eighteenth amendment of the United States Constitution (“Guide”). The illegal and immoral businesses grew in Nevada when construction work started on Hoover Dam (“Guide”). During the Great Depression, illegal gambling and easy divorce brought many jobs and tourists to the state (“Guide”). Notably, the residency requirement to obtain a divorce was even reduced to 6 weeks to attract more tourists (“Guide”). Upon knowing these facts, I felt the need to use my superpower as Captain History to change the face of Nevada. I believe that the cited historical event is the main reason why Nevada could not experience real economic growth.
To change the event, I would like to employ two ways, being a politician and an activist. First, I would make sure that I will be Nevada’s governor at that time. In that way, I could prevent the legalization of immoral acts such as gambling and prostitution. I will make sure that immoral laws are not approved. This is possible since under the constitution of Nevada, the governor has the ultimate power or authority to approve or disapprove endorsed bills in its jurisdiction. To note, if an endorsed bill is not approved by the governor, then, it will not become a law. Stated otherwise, a bill needs to be approved by the governor to be legally effective in a certain jurisdiction. In this context, when the lawmakers in Nevada endorse the bill which will legalize prostitution or gambling, then, I will have to disapprove it.
With regard to being an activist, I will be an activist who has many connections in the media industry. I will utilize the connections that I have to inform the public and even the national government that the state of Nevada is adopting a law that is against the United States Constitution, the supreme law of America. Also, I will disseminate articles emphasizing the bad consequences of legalizing prostitution and gambling. Nonetheless, I could not do this if I have no supporters. Thus, I will encourage many people to join me in the struggle. Together, we will conduct rallies and demonstrations so that we can have the attention of the public.
If the two aforementioned methods will be successful, then Nevada would not be known as the state of gambling and prostitution. The people will not associate immoral terms with the state. Instead, it will be famous to be the center of commercial business in America. To borrow the words of Senator Harry Reid, since prostitution and gambling would be illegal in Nevada, the state would be regarded as the first place for investment and innovation (qt. in Madison). Possible investors will not be discouraged to invest in Nevada. Presently, investors are reluctant to conduct business in Nevada due to the presence of brothels and gambling places (“Guide”).
Furthermore, social problems in Nevada would be absent. The social problems are the following: alcoholism, suicide, gangs, divorce, and a high rate of teenage pregnancy (“Guide”). These social problems are prevalent today in Nevada due to the state’s twenty-four-hour economy (“Guide”). A twenty-four economy means that night and day, businesses in Nevada are open. This is true in the gaming industry. The gaming industry has caused an increase in crime rates in Nevada (“Guide”). This is a sound finding since gambling is addictive. Addiction to gambling could lead an individual to do illegal things just to have the financial resource to gamble. In another aspect, the legalization of prostitution has increased the rate of pregnant teens in the state. Since prostitution is legal, teenagers are not afraid to risk their bodies and dignity.
