Film and Media Film and Media The purpose of this paper is to analyze an element i.e. the opening shot and the light and scenic landscape from the film ‘No Man’s Land’ directed by Bosnian director and writer, Danis Tanovic. Furthermore, the analysis of the element will be done with the help of the reading i.e. ‘Film Art, an introduction’ by David Bordwell and Kristin Thompson. With the opening shot of the film, the director has successfully developed an understanding of the film’s chief theme i.e. war.

In the opening shot, the director shows a few Croatian fighters that are lost in a fog (battlefield). The overall scene is perfectly shot in order to give the viewer an understanding that they are in a place that has been affected by war and that the fog is the result of it. The first scene is too dark and unclear whereas in the following scene when the fighters wake up in the morning, the director has utilized the perfect lighting tones. Furthermore the long distance shot has also added to the overall scene (Bordwell & Thompson, 2008).

According to Bordwell & Thompson, 2008, creativity in the film should have the ability to effect the viewers. The authors have asserted importance of technology and creativity in films. It is with the help of these elements that films creates illusions and the viewers are bound to believe that it is real. The director of the film, No Man’s Land has also completely understood the idea and has effectively utilized all the chief and important elements of technology and has merged them with his creativity (Bordwell & Thompson, 2008).
