Lecturer This paper will be seeking to identify the Ethos, Logos and Pathos based on the story “Little Girls or Little Women? The Disney Princess Effect, written by Stephanie Hanes”. The essay was written by the author with the aim of discussing the different cultures that girls have gotten used and which they emulate. The author has incorporated the testimonials from other people who have issues similar to hers in regards to the way the girls view their bodily image. The author presents an insight that shows how much input is placed in “looking good” as girls start to get worried of their appearances at a very early stage in the childhood development.
The author places the blame on the Disney Princess franchise that has been explicit in their content to the point that the young girls viewing this content feel obliged to embrace a certain appearance or to dress up in a particular way as they relate with what they see from the Disney Princesses that they adore. The article also presents a discussion that the other media platforms like music videos, television and social media have to share the blame for the way young girls view the discussion of the elements of their sexualityWhen talking of the element of Ethos in the essay, it is practical to understand the relevance of understanding the trust worthiness of the article.
After evaluation of the piece, it is apparent that the author has done the relevant research for this article and has interviewed the relevant people whose insight is important to the discussion. Some of them are also mothers who have had to deal with the facts that their daughters are having a hard time embracing the culturally acceptable values in regards to their image and sexuality. The essay has used lots of Logos for the purposes of proving the point of discussion. The writer has discussed the interest to this topic by relating it to a firsthand approach when the paper is introduced with the experience from Mary Finucane on page 1 of the essay. Ms. Finucane is a mother who noticed that her daughter had changed her behaviors as she related less with her female friends and got interested in waiting for a ‘prince’ as she had seen in one of the Disney programs.
The paper has also presented related statistics to support the discussion, for example, on page two she states “One-quarter of 14-to-17-year-olds of both sexes polled by The Associated Press and MTV in 2009 reported either sending naked pictures of themselves or receiving naked pictures of someone else.” This quote means that the author has done extensive research and can use the facts to present a prediction of the future trends and that is what makes it an Ethos. (Source: http://www.csmonitor.com/USA/Society/2011/0924/Little-girlsor-little-women-The-Disney-princess-effect) The discussion on Logos is presented through the use of statistics as well as examples of persons whose quotes and insight can add on the matter of credibility of this discussion.
If there is one thing that this paper is full of, then it has to be quotes from the people whose insight matter to the discussion, especially the parents that may have dealt with the topic at one time in their lives. Page 2, for example, presents a quotation of statistics and facts such as “The marketing group NPD Fashionworld reported in 2003 that more than $1.6 million is spent annually on thong underwear for 7-to-12-year-olds” which presents a fact to show that the young girls are changing the ways in which they dress in line with what they suppose will be accepted by others on social media or in line with the Disney Princesses that they view on the television.
A recurrent theme in this article is that of sexualization of the girl child.(Source: http://www.csmonitor.com/USA/Society/2011/0924/Little-girlsor-little-women-The-Disney-princess-effect) After reading the essay, it is also clear that the author uses Pathos to present an insight in regards to passing the information that she intends to pass to the audience. Pathos is a tool used by the author to evoke emotions or to entertain the audience. An example is in page 6 of the essay in the website where it is located.
An example is presented in regards to the idea of how much the color pink means to the girls as they can relate it to Disney Princess stories. The author talks of another source “Cinderella Ate My Daughter” used in her research which was written by Orenstein. Orenstein explains “how the color pink has become increasingly ubiquitous to the point where many young girls police each other with pink radar – if that tricycle, for instance, isnt pink, well then, you should not be riding it.”(p6) The reason for considering this quote as Pathos is the comic element attached to it with claims that no girl should be riding on a tricycle any color other than pink.
The girls police each other with pink radar when playing makes it even funnier to the point that excites the reader. (Source: http://www.csmonitor.com/USA/Society/2011/0924/Little-girlsor-little-women-The-Disney-princess-effect) In conclusion, the paper can be observed to be applying the particular reading strategies that have the capacity to attract the reader as well as to make the text stand out as a classical essay. The writer has also incorporated statistics and quotes that are relevant to the topic in which she is addressing in this essay.
The discussion regarding sexuality in young girls as young as three years of age is contentious enough and the essay presented by Stephanie Hanes embraces a comprehensive approach in the discussion that has got a large number of people concerned.Work citedHanes, Stephanie. “Little Girls or Little Women?
