His Strategy enabled the Greek to win the long –drawn out war. He returned to his native land after an interval of twenty years. Ulysses does not want to settle down in Ithaca even though he has become very old and ought to rest and relax. He says that Ithaca has no attractions. His wife is old and devoid of charms. The land is barren and rocky. The people are barbarous and Ulysses cannot remain impartial. Uniform law cannot be maintained. He has to administer different laws to satisfy the uncivilized race.
He does not want to confine himself to such animal activities as hoarding, sleeping and eating. He says “I will drink life to the lees “(ln 6). Like a deep rooted drunkard who drinks who drinks even the dregs in the glass. Ulysses wants to remain active in the fag-end of his life. Life at home has become very dull. He thinks nostalgically about his past when he experienced keen pain and pleasure both on land and at the sea, both alone and in the company of his comrades. He thinks longingly about his dangerous expeditions, braving violent storms.
Even though the appearance of the Hyades warned him not to venture out, he did not care for personal safety .He enjoyed sailing in stormy weather. Next he reminisces about the different countries he had visited, each with his own type of government and cultural and social milieu.. He proudly claims that he was acclaimed as a great hero wherever he went. He became part and parcel of the places he visited. He was not regarded as an alien anywhere. He has understood that knowledge is too vast to be mastered in a life time.
Like the horizon which seems to recede backward with every step that a traveller takes forward, experiencing life in all it totality.” In the next stanza he introduces his son as “mine own Telemachus “(ln 35).
