I used brainstorming to begin determining my topic. I listed everything that I thought of regarding early childhood education. I then clustered these topics together based on similarity. For example I came up with the topic of developmental stages and clustered with this topic were ages and stages, Piaget, developmentally appropriate practices, academic expectations for each stage and state standards for early childhood. This cluster left me a few relevant topics and thoughts and ideas to match each topic.

I then picked the topic that I liked the most. The topic I chose did not have the most items listed, but it was the one that I was the most interested in. The topic I chose was the importance of free play in early childhood education settings and this developed into the thesis statement, “Although it may appear that play is not important in terms of the academic achievement of early childhood students, in fact, play is vital to their future educational success.” OutlineI.
