This shows that character resemblance is often an interesting subject comparing the odds of being so and is reasonably present in different genres and literary works. “The dead” by James Joyce basis on Gabriel Conroy’s consciousness while Henry James’s “Daisy Miller” has a vogue that ushers the American Girl’s figure as seen through the eyes of Winterbourne. Both the stories are unrelated with respect to place and time; one being published in early 1900s and the other one in late 1800s, one in Ireland and the other in Switzerland and Italy.
While both focus on relationships, the plots differ to quite an extent. Joyce’s moving onto and away from the point of focus of the story in “The dead” along with the narration point of view in Gabriel’s mind makes the reading like a movie camera out-focusing the action to fill in the natural details (Begnal 1999). “Daisy Miller”, on the other hand, judges the audacious and infamous heroine inscrutably judged from eyes of Winterbourne, which James dramatizes in his work (Anesko 2006).
Winterbourne and Gabriel resemble to quite an extent and even though Winterbourne is shown to be a more powerful character in his relationship and in relationship related decisions as a person, the similarity in decisions they have had to make shows how similar their characters are and yet different by the way of choices they make. This paper analyzes both characters and their ways of tackling and managing the relationships they had. When it comes to the characters of Gabriel Conroy and Mr. Winterbourne, it is not hard to find similarities between the characters’ personalities and life.
Both of them belong to a high social status, are in love with women who they find hard to understand and struggle to get themselves in an important spot of their lives. This struggle leads each of them to epiphanies where they are affected differently showing the contrast in their characters. Being of significant stature in their society, both characters’ interaction with their aunts is another point of character relationships that resemble within their stories. On the contrast, Gabriel not being so strong in his beliefs and opinions compares as less influence than Winterbourne.
Gabriel’s nervousness on patriotism and lack of strong opinions with lesser reasoning only exclaiming of being ‘sick of his country’ shows the character being less stalwart. Winterbourne on the other hand is shown as unflinching and more tenacious by the way he defends Daisy’s courtship of her courier as being ‘uncultivated’ in response to his aunt’s perceptions of her behavior. The two characters contrast in their personalities one being confused while the other self-assured, perhaps changing the way they are affected by their epiphanies.
Where being wealthy and connecting with rich peers is another of the similarities, their routes to attaining their fortunes differ. Winterbourne being rich from the start and Gabriel having to earn his fortune through ups and downs put a balance to their characters in comparison giving Gabriel the strength of having to self-attained his ambitions in spite of the character differences. This on the other hand makes Gabriel unaccustomed to the rich class making
