Assignment5 Literature Review FatemahAlkhalifah EMR-5400 DiyanaKamarudin October 28 Literature Review Quality of education is one of the main factors that play their role in improving students learning. Conventional practices of teaching have been followed for ages. Black boards were transformed into white boards in 1980s. However, the overall teaching style remained same regardless of this transformation. Computers and technology have come to play their role in every part of our life and have changed the way people think, work, or solve problem (Brown, 2011). Schools are still deprived of the technology in classrooms. Besides the lacking of using technology, a lot of teachers ignore how to use variety of teaching style to engage all students to learn and improve their skills. There is a need of innovative approach to facilitate transformational change in the schools in general and resource rooms in particular (Suwondo & Wulandari, 2013). Teachers have an important role in the students’ learning process because of which they are able to attain the best knowledge and learning. Therefore, it is important to examine the motivational factors that can be provided to students in order to help them in their learning processes and also to allow them to attain the highest level of academic achievements (Wen-jin, Chia-ju & Shi-an, 2012). According to Ahmad (2013), it has been observed that some of the students lag behind in academic achievements because of which they are not able to perform well in their studies that often result in getting lower grades. For this reason, it is important to make students goal oriented in order to enhance their learning potential. However, some students are brilliant enough to get higher grades. The major reason behind these two types of students is the level of motivation they have. According to David (2012), lack of motivation in some students results in their lower academic performances. This difference in motivation level is either by birth in some students or because of the way their teachers teach them (David, 2012). The response of the parents can also have an impact on the learning capability of students either positively or negatively, which means that they can have better outcomes and results on their children learning. Their negative responses can also halt the learning potential of the students in a negative way that could also be harmful for them. Teachers should also avoid overloading the students with excessive workload because this impacts their routines and learning habits negatively (Efthymios, Loanna & Losif, 2009). Therefore, it is the teachers’ responsibility to maintain an equal amount of balance for students between the class work and assignments that are assigned to them. According to Suwondo and Wulandari (2013), there should be a model on the basis of which the students should be assessed and tested for effective learning. This is important to make students goal oriented. However, it promotes the inquiry based learning of students in science (Suwondo & Wulandari, 2013). In most of the cases, students fail to fulfill the course assessment requirements because they are not given the right instructions regarding how they should conduct their work and what preparations they should make in order to have better preparation for exams. This eventually results in bad outcomes, thus, stopping them from preparing for the final exams (Suwondo & Wulandari, 2013). Science students are also more critical in thinking. Therefore, there should be some rules and regulations for them following which they should carry out their work. If these bounds and standards are not set, then the students may make false assumptions in their work course. Therefore, students also have to do the same thing in their learning process where they have to make standards for themselves on the basis of which they conduct their studies and this also helps them in focusing towards learning and become able to achieve their goals (Suwondo & Wulandari, 2013). Students’ Motivation First of all, it is important to make students motivated towards their goals and objectives, which proves to be effective in learning as discussed in the article, “School environment and academic achievement of standard ix students” (Arul & Vimala, 2012). However, students often lag behind in learning because they are not encouraged well in their learning process by their parents and families and, thus, they are not able to attain their academic goals. Therefore, motivation is needed by the students to achieve their academic goals. There are some students in the classrooms that are able to perform their tasks easily without much effort while others have to work step by step in order to fulfill all the requirements, which often make them take much longer time. It is actually motivation behind students that makes them able to perform better as compared to the other students present in the class. Motivation makes students able to perform well and show effective academic outcomes (Wen-jin, Chia-ju & Shi-an, 2012). Motivation based on personal attributes helps students to analyze their personal capabilities as the result of which they become able to perform well in their personal and professional lives. The students become able to analyze the reasons behind their success and failure and also to find out the reasons behind why they fail or what attributes to their success. This not only improves the personal grooming of the students but also results in becoming more successful and effective in their academic results (Coon, 2002). If teachers use modern style of learning beside traditional style, then this will assist the students in attaining a good academic level. Teachers’ Role Teachers play a significant role in developing the interest of their students. This is one of the most important applications of the motivational theory in the instructional design. For example, if students are asked to read an essay on insects, then students would never be able to show interest in the course and this will eventually impact their learning and academic outcomes negatively (Nuangchalerm, 2014). It is not to let students read more than they learn. While on the other hand, if teachers use the inquiry style of learning using technology, cooperative learning, questioning method, and reliable learning that contact to our life, students will learn to gain more success. If teachers break the inquiry-based essays into paragraphs and then add some spices in each paragraph by relating it to some interesting real examples, then the students will eventually develop more interest in the subject. This is a way through which teachers can develop the students’ interest as the result of which students become able to learn better and show improved academic performances (Nuangchalerm, 2014). Teachers should also play their role in motivating the students towards doing any kind of new task. This will help the students in developing a high level of confidence. Students need encouragement and if they receive degraded remarks from the teachers, their confidence shatters. Therefore, students always need to be encouraged in order to develop their confidence level which will eventually result in their higher academic results (Brown, 2011). Also the interest level if increased, promotes the students to have better learning outcomes with less effort need to be put in the subject. This will not only save the time of learning for the students but eventually will help them to perform better in their academic learning and will eventually perform well in their students. Teachersalso play an important role in the motivational building of the students and this helps them to remain motivated towards their studies. Conclusion It is important to create a good environment to learn and teach. Most of the research focused on how teachers help students to improve their learning and skills in the class (Brown, 2011; Nuangchalerm, 2014); however, these articles were not able to explain how students can show responsibly of learning. Students’ decreased level of motivation not only hinders the way of understanding the science concepts but also results in making the innovative thinking of the students static and fragile. However, it is highly recommended that students should make sure that their learning is based on thinking out of the box and rectifying their mistakes instead of blaming the instructions or the other students (Efthymios, Loanna & Losif, 2009). Moreover, parents’ attitude towards science learning needs to be changed in order to increase the interest of students in science learning. The home-based learning should also be given equal importance, and for this purpose, there is a need of involving the community members for the sake of exploring the home-based discourse. This will eventually be really important for the students in making their skills polished at home and at schools. Also, most of the researches (Suwondo & Wulandari, 2013; Arul &Vimala, 2012) focused on the environment of the class room, inquiry work, and student motivation, but they did not mention students with learning disabilities and did not give any solution or suggestion for the way of working with them and the way to engage them with other students. Moreover, previous studies (Suwondo & Wulandari, 2013; Arul & Vimala, 2012; Brown, 2011; Nuangchalerm, 2014) have not mentioned the way to create a good relationship between students and teachers.
