This has helped me reflect over my life so far and my professional and educational goals in my future. Once I complete a bachelor’s degree I will continue to pursue a higher level of education since competition in the job marketplace has gone up a lot during the past decade. Less than 10% of the US population has a graduate degree (Phonydiploma, 2011). One of the best things about this course was the fact that the students communicated well with each other. I was expose to a great group the help me visualize and appreciate the value of teamwork and communications. It is always important in the classroom and in work settings to have the lines of communication open. I once was part of group in which nobody seemed to communicate with each other. The end result of the project was failure. Walden University has a tremendous undergraduate program that provides tremendous support to its students due to the quality and human capital of its faculty members. The professors at Walden University are great educators with superb communications skills. Walden University was founded in 1970 and its mission statement is: “Walden University’s mission is to provide a diverse community of career professionals with the opportunity to transform themselves as scholar-practitioners so that they can effect positive social change, in their own families and around the world” (Waldenu, 2011). The selection of textbooks and other reading my professor’s have provided for me have helped me a lot in the educational process. I have become more adept at performing my own market research due to the courses I have taken at Walden University. The school has high responsible values that raise the moral standards of its alumni. I believe a lot in the value of social responsibility. I donate money to several causes included the non-profit organization Feed The Children whose mission is stop world hunger (Feedthechildren, 2011). My educational journey at Walden helped me adapt better to an online environment. There are millions of Americans today working on a telecommuting basis. A telecommuter is a person that works at his home or on the road who communicates with his employer utilizing the latest communication technologies including scanners, the computer, broadband wireless internet, and smartphones. I learned a lot about society and its needs in the courses I have taken at Walden University. The school has helped me broaden my ethical horizon by exposing me to case studies and scenarios that require ethical thinking to provide a fair solution. I believe a lot in the value of corporate social responsibility. Companies in the 21st century have to act more ethical than ever due to the higher expectations of the major stakeholder groups. Society has realized that the private corporations have more money and wealth combined than the total wealth of all 210 countries in the world. Three areas that must be targeted by CSR programs of corporations are labor, environmental, and discriminatory policies. One of the new trends in the marketplace is ageism. The baby boomers are saturating the job marketplace and many companies are discriminating against them since some of them have reached retirement age and they refuse to leave the job marketplace. Unemployment is on the rise in the United States. The unemployment rate in the United States in September 2011 was 9.1% (Tradingeconomics, 2011). The environment has always been very important to me. People and the business world are destroying our environment. Global warming is a major long term threat to mankind. A lot of the pollution that occurred during the 20th century was caused by multinational corporations. The earth cannot afford history to repeat itself in the 21st century as pollution must decrease. I believe a lot in the value of fairness and that it is imperative to comply with labor laws. In the late 1990’s Nike Corporation embarrassed itself through the revelation of a sweatshop scandal. It has taken over a decade for the firm to recover the goodwill it lost during that era. I want to become a global leader that uses high moral and ethical standards in my decision making process. Due to the globalization movement ethics has become more complicated. Many countries have labor laws that are not as protective of employee rights as the United States. Multinational corporations that comply with local laws are not doing anything illegal, but their actions might be unethical. A multi-national corporation should not be paying its foreign workers $1.00 an hour even if the country labor laws allowed since they are making millions of dollars in profit off that labor. I have many professional goals I want to accomplish in life. In the foreseeable future once I complete a graduate degree I might be interested in becoming a professor. I would also like to save money and start my own business in the future. Upon graduation I will look for a job in a multinational corporation that can provide me with good job security. I plan on saving at least $50,000. I will invest in a business before buying a home. It is a better long term investment. My mid term goal is to pursue a masters degree after completing my undergraduate studies. As a professional I will donate some of my time to non-profit organizations that support good social causes. In life people need to have goals and aspirations for the future. As a young student I realize that my life is just starting. It is imperative that I put a lot of effort into my education because economies of most developed countries have shifted into the service and knowledge economy. The economic business model requires workers that have special skills and capabilities that can only be obtain through a formal education. Walden University has helped me improve my self-confidence and my overall communication skills. I have a more active listener and I am able to synthesize information better. This has helped me in my personal life as my relations with my friends and family have improved by me becoming a better communicator. In the future I plan on using my improved communication skills in the workplace. Two of my long term goals are to own a business and to give college classes. References Feedthechildren.com (2011).
