Dontrell, Who Kissed the Sea On 27 May I attended the staging of the Dontrell, Who Kissed the Sea that was hosted by the Oregon Contemporary Theatre. Every student was required to attend such an event to be in a position to complete their assignments on Go to the Theater! I managed to arrive and settle in the theater with fifteen minutes remaining before the play commenced. I was particularly excited since this was my first time to attend a live preview of a play. I had previously watched Dontrell, Who Kissed the Sea, but I had not managed to have a ‘live’ experience. I was also keen to note the excitement and expectations of the other audience. I wondered how the experience would be by watching the live performance.
The old people in the audienceThey arrived earlier than most of us and occupied the front seats since many of them were in the prescription eyeglasses. However, there were still a few middle-aged people. They looked curious, and most of them could be heard discussing the flow of the play before watching it staged. On that particular day, I happened to sit next to an old woman. What is liked about her is that she was kind, peaceful and engaged. She narrated to me how embarrassing it felt her attend plays at her age. She attributed the situation to lack of active theaters during her youthful times. She, too, was excited to see the real actors perform on stage.
It was an excellent experience. It felt so realistic to watch the live performance. Watching the actors on stage was better than when I had watched them on screen. Firstly, they brought out unique comic effects such as the use of gestures, facial expressions, as well as movements on the stage. However, it was an unusual way of spending my money and leisure time. Previously, I used to attend football matches or hang out with friends. We would use our money for buying snacks and drinks during the weekends, say. It was a better experience in that it was something new, something I had not done before. As a result, it was interesting and lively. I enjoyed every bit of it due to the curiosity to follow the flow of the play in a live setting.
The stage was open. It was raised a few inches above the ground. There were several chairs and tables arranged on the stage. Besides, there was also a raised platform on the stage. Additionally, a blue light illuminated the area. However, the seats on the side of the audience were illuminated by light, bright light. The audience sat on red chairs arranged systematically in rows and columns, ascending in height from the nearest to the stage to the farthest. There was also music playing in the background. Listening keenly, I could tell that it was a playlist comprising of cool rap, pop, and rock categories. It contained content in matters love. That was because the play staged was based on love and dating.
Another notable is that the production was professional. The host theater invited the original producers and actors of the play. In this way, they managed to give each audience value for their money. There had been issues of staging amateur productions and charging the cost of professional production. That led to complaints from the clients and viewers. Unfortunately, I did not manage to identify any of them as they performed. However, I could identify them from the Xerox copy presented on the theater program. That showed that producers frequently make enhanced to the characters in terms of graphics and mixing of colors during production. As such, they appear different on stage from movies and plays. The podium was decorated nicely with materials with the blue color. Actors also wore blue costumes. The costume designer did an excellent in creating a romantic environment for the scene. The presence of a pool to represent the sea to be kissed added more glamor to the scene.
Dontrell, Who Kissed the Sea: Review
Dontrell, Who Kissed the Sea composed by Nathan Alan Davis is an awesome story narrated in a style that grasps all societies. The topic is all-inclusive - to join with our ancestors. It is the narrative of fantasy and the quest for that fantasy. It is the tale of a family and the ties that bind and the affection that gives up. Dontrell, Who Kissed the Sea, is a radiant, dramatic ordeal.
The play begins with a resting Dontrell Jones III. The spirits of his African ancestors moved around him singing to the Rhythm of a djembe. He wakes and takes the recorder and begins: "Captain’s Log." It is funny how Dontrell attempts to recover his grandfather from the sea by diving into it. Dontrell is a well-designed piece of art. It is a theater in its idealist structure. A Greek (African) theme, move, tune, rap, talks, unbelievably graceful and splendid dialect, emulate, a cleanser musical show, and numerous quotable quotes that ought to show up on T-shirts. We snickered and sometimes shed a tear as we go with Dontrell on his odyssey. In spite of the fact that Davis composes from his African roots, the story as told resounded with the Native American foundation.
As we go with Dontrell, we meet the individuals from his family. His cousin Shea was entirely played by Yvonne Huff. Jasmine St. Clair is Danielle, the younger sibling who makes us giggle. Charles McCoy is Robby, the closest companion who takes us for a ride where we cling to each word he raps while helping Dontrell to remember all the things he should do. Benai Boyd is Mom-solid snickering, grumbling, guarding, and tolerating. She was all that we whined about our mothers and made us adore her for it. The group of people aggregately took after with "Gracious Oh," and what happened next was splendid: Marlon Sanders was solid, frightening, and amusing.
The expressions of Nathan Alan Davis are significant. I needed to record the numerous pearls of insight, although they were many. The Set Designer Stephanie Kerley Schwartz made a mind-blowing showing of utilizing the space and making a set that changed. The executive Gregory Wallace made a mind-blowing display of giving the story every one of its virtuoso. That includes balance choreography; a Greek catastrophe, a cleanser musical show, a rap, mime, phantoms, dreams, swimming pools, Baltimore, storm adrift.
Dontrell Who Kissed the Sea is a dramatic ordeal that rises above all societies. It is all-inclusive in degree, narrating at its finest. It is essentially enchantment and fun, yet useful and significant. I recommend people to watch it. It is fun. It was an excellent way of spending my money and time. At the end of the day, I learned a lot about production and live stage performance.
