The application of the musical score is eminent in moonstruck film. Unlike other cinematic languages, music offers the perfect romance setting in this film. A bit of Puccini La Boheme emanates alongside some traditional Italian music setup. The opera intrigues excellent addition throughout the film while a variety of music genre is in Moonstruck. Dean Matins That’s Amore represents pop music besides Carr piece of it must be him. Another score from Dick Hyman brings out an outstanding performance.
In various aspects, Moonstruck stands out to be an opera. In its medium of consuming and yearning love, the film deals with the most common theme in most operas. Characters in this film differ in singing an aria and belong to different parts of the opera to emphasize on modern day opera, which comprises of the score, opera and pop music. The screenplay by John Patrick Shanley compares normal social life to the opera. In this aspect, the audience arranges the characters in their respective positions of the song while these songs stand for personal leitmotifs. Every song has an attachment from a couple or a character hence positioning itself as a character unsung song.
The quintessential Italian-American family song by Dean Martin opens and closes the film. It foreshadows the happenings in New York in the night of the full moon between the respective couples in the film. This piece of music also takes the position for the theme song in New York. It also points out the ethnicity of Italian-Americans and localizes the audience in the city of New York in the opening scene. Vikki Carr attaches Rose Castorini and Cosmo couple to the song Must be Him that presents the truth about the youthful yearnings.
