During that period, women were supposed to do domestic work while the men were the providers. In the contemporary world, the painting would be viewed with disapproval since the roles of men and women are not clearly separated in the new world, the woman would not pose with an apron since domestic roles are no longer considered as solely for men.
The Nighthawks is a painting by Edward Hopper, painted in 1942. The portrait depicts people sitting in a restaurant having a late night dinner. The painting portrays 20th century realism where people are lonelier than ever. The workers are of both gender depict the new world in which all people are free to work even at night. The women are brave enough to work night shifts. In the painting is another man and woman having diner. The two appear to be having some sort of affair though the woman is not married as depicted by lack of a ring.
However, the man’s left hand is hidden. This could depict he is hiding something. This could thus depict a new word where women are brave to enjoy their evenings out with men. Thomas Hart Benton mural paintings depict the social history of Missouri in the period around 1936. The painting tells a narrative of the arrival and activities of settlers in Missouri. Some commentaries argue that Thomas paintings depicts the modern American life in rural as well as in urban areas.
