2. Rajaisic Food - Spicy food including meat. Beef and pork are strictly prohibited. Sometimes chicken is avoided as it feeds mostly on litter (Hinduism, 2012). All other non-vegetarian diets are allowed. Kings, soldiers and all people doing laborious work should consume this food.
3. Tamasic Food - Highly spicy, fat filled food which induces laziness in a person, similar to modern day fast food. Alcohol and drugs come under this category. This food can be taken once in a while by all during merriment, but should be generally avoided (Heaven and Earth, 2008).
Hinduism insists on offering ‘Prasad’ to the deities in both houses and temples. Hinduism has scores of Gods similar to Greeks. But offering food or ‘Prasad’ is a must for every God. This Prasad can be anything from a simple dessert called ‘laddu’ to elaborate meals (Ramadas, 2009). A particular temple in Delhi called Akshardam produces nearly 1000 varieties of desserts for a lady deity on some special occasions. The food offered to the God is distributed among the people who visit the temple. Preference is given to the poor, disabled and the elderly. In India, any person can literally walk into a temple and finish their breakfast or lunch with the Prasad offered. The 1000 varieties of sweets are distributed among the millions of people visiting the temple and in the nearby slums and orphanages as a token of celebration of the auspicious day.
Hinduism relates food, charity and worship very closely. The purpose of worship should be thanksgiving and sharing. It is a common practice in India to bargain with God and give Prasad to certain number of poor people, if a wish is fulfilled. Eg, a student promises to distribute Prasad to 10 people if he passes the exam.
