Download file to see previous pages Parallel computing requires multiple processors, which serves as the workers and the network that serves as the link between workers. It also requires the operating system that functions as the manager of the system that controls the multiple workers in the system. The message-passing model is defined as collection of processes that use the local memory of a computer in solving problems. These processes initiate communication by sending and receiving information in the form of messages. The transfer of data in the message-passing model must have cooperative operations that are performed by each process. In this model, the programming aspect occurs through the linkage of calls to libraries that take care of the data exchange function between processors. This is advantageous because message-passing libraries can be easily located in modern programming languages (Fox, 2002:71).
The Message Passing Interface (MPI) is a platform that sends messages to a process and relied on it and the infrastructure that supports the process to facilitate code running. It targets the distributed memory system and is available on different types of parallel machines. It can also be applied to Fortran and C programs, enables inter-task communication in computers, and uses an SPMD programming model (Fox, 2002:72).
The Parallel Virtual Machine (PMV) makes it possible to gather different computer systems and make them a single parallel machine. It was developed in 1989 and is a tool that can be used to create and execute parallel applications in computers. The PVM operates in heterogeneous Unix computers. It used the PVM daemon process and a library interface to perform functions (Fox, 2002:74).
