This creates a situation where in a large numbers of individuals who have criminal backgrounds find themselves in close proximity. Some of the reasons and correlates to criminal behavior include depressed mood states, high arousal, anxiety, exposure to violence, and cognitive and affective factors that also correlate with violent behavior (Ellis, Beaver & Wright, 2009). When a high number of such individuals find themselves in a confined space, the likelihood of altercations exists; and so does the possibility of violent behavior. Thus, it becomes necessary to find methods of reducing the aggression and violent behavior in order to maintain peace and provide an atmosphere conducive to personal development.
Research has found that violence occurs as a result of a number of factors. There are sociological factors like exposure to violence, stress, low socio-economic status, etc that increase the probability of a violent response to a situation. There are temperamental factors like high arousal and low impulse control as well as lower intelligence and ability that increase the tendency of the individual to respond to stressors with a violent reaction (Englander & Erlbaum; 1997). On the neurological level, aggression and violence is associated with a reduction in serotonin and endorphins – the hormones that help in the maintenance of a positive and happy state of mind. Along with this, there is an increase in the arousal hormone epinephrine. Thus it is believed that one way to reduce the occurrence of violent behavior is to help individuals to change their physiological states and increase the level of serotonin and endorphins and create a more positive state of mind (Walsh, 2011).
