These include clothing, food, water, sleep, and shelter. Without water and food we cannot survive. When we think of home we associate it with being safe, warm and comfortable. According to Maslow, institutions must provide employees with payments that enable them to acquire favorable conditions of living. This is because a hungry person or a person without sleep cannot function well or think clearly. This implies that the institution is not going to benefit much.
Safety needs are second in the hierarchy of needs. They are triggered when physiological needs are fulfilled. These are required for physical and emotional well-being of an employee. They include job security, health insurance, and safety working conditions. Job security is important because there is no fear of being laid off or replaced (Mikkelsen, Bøgh Andersen & Jacobsen, 2015). Secure environment is not harmful to the employee in terms of health. This entails that employees free from fear and harm work without fear or harm. This leads to high performance of the institution.
Social needs form the third level of needs as per the theory. They are prompted after safety needs have been actualized. These talk about the need for love and affection and a sense of belonging. Employees love to work in a place where there are close friends.
