The authors of the article critically examined five different studies that explored the connection between teenage pregnancies and sexual education classes that were administered in school. They found that the majority of them proved that there is none or insignificantly little correlation between the two variables. In spite of the fact that sometimes did show a sign of vague dependency, there are certain limitations that do not allow one to make a direct connection. That is why the author came to a conclusion that providing sexual education at school does not help the students to avoid teenage pregnancies, but has only places an emotional burden on them.
The independent variable of the study is the number of students that attend classes of sexual education. It must be noted that at the present moment schools do not make such classes mandatory. That is why it is left to the student’s discression whether to attend them or not. It would not be a mistake to suggest that many teens decide not to participate in such classes for various reasons, though they may be interested in learning more facts about sexual activity.
The dependent variable that will be examined by the study is the rate of occurrence of teenage pregnancies. One would make no mistake that a simple increase in the number of students who take sexual education in school would not have an immediate impact on this social problem.
