My life was spent with positivity and I always felt a sense of equality as I moved along with life. We belonged to a working class and the neighborhood had people of our kind and playing with them never gave me a thought of alienation. We as a family possessed a sense of power as we did not had to face the poverty and struggling faced by many in our society. For the very same reason, I never had faced racism as we belonged to an educated and working class. This does not mean that racism did not exist in my neighborhood. Racism may be defined as any attitude, action, institutional structure or social policy that subs – ordinates person or groups because of their color (sue 7 ) .
Frankly Speaking, I could see bullying and sarcasm in my school and neighborhood and definitely racism was not a thing of past. But in fact, in almost every audience I address, there is someone who will suggest that racism is a thing of past (Tatum 3).It is true that in our society less have changed about racism and ethnicity as I have many a times faced the issue when it comes to my skin color and culture. I had my group of friends and they were people from various racial backgrounds and ethnicity. However, I never had a biased stand on any of my mates as I was brought up with a thought that race is not a criteria to make friendship. I have been raised with a consciousness that poverty, race or ethnicity is irrelevant in a society and all that matters was love and humanity. I was taught to see myself as an individual whose moral state depended on her individual moral will (Peggy 1) .
