The phenomenon of social media and the Internet use as a whole appeared as a result of offering the population opportunities which one could not even imagine in the past. It literally changed the lives of many, making them to join the force of its permanent fans. To start with, the Internet significantly widened opportunities in communication allowing people to connect while being miles away from each other. (Sponcil & Gitimu) The following appears to be one of the major reasons standing behind people’s overwhelming engagement in social media as far as it enables persons to form communities, make new acquaintances or communicate with friends and relatives regardless of distance.
Apart from meeting the needs of communication and social interactions, the frequent use of the Internet and social media is conditioned by the search for information of any kind. This can touch upon education, business, spheres of private interests, such as learning more about a hobby, or making oneself acquainted with recent events happening around the globe. However, it is noticeable that in contrast to meeting the needs in communication or information, not all Internet activity is purposeful or beneficial for a person. In fact, according to various credible sources, from near 4 to 13 percent of American Internet users are likely to show the symptoms of addiction that are similar to other kinds of addiction, such as addiction to alcohol or narcotics. (Augenbraun, 2014; "Net addiction,") Among such should be named preoccupation with digital media, mood changes, inability to control the time spent online, withdrawal symptoms, and many other that influence individual’s normal functioning. (Cash & Rae, 2012)Thereof, it is currently regarded as a kind of compulsive behavior and demands further profound investigation.

The advantages of social networking are numerous, mainly in the area of speed of communication, instant information sharing, education, reuniting with loved ones, commercial marketing and obvious social perks. However, engaging in social media activity also has its drawbacks, of which the possibility of addiction and over-reliance is a primary concern, particularly for teenagers and young adults.
The study used both interview guides and questionnaire to obtain responses from the study participants. The findings of the study reveals that this study generation surfers from social media addiction. The study recommends for more research to be conducted on how students in the institution using social media in comparison to the generations prior and the new generations.
According to the report this social phenomena needs to be further studied as to its causes and effects on users of social media, especially with young people who are just beginning to build up their social networks in order to meet their social. The topic for this research paper has been selected due to its relevance to university students today.
