Another reason to why study of this topic is important is that the study of the lives of minority women enables students to understand the challenges that minority women face in comparison Caucasian women. Lastly, study of minority women experiences enhances our understanding of women roles prescribed by their social environments. Through comparison of roles of women from different backgrounds I was able to establish the main responsibilities that societies have allocated to women. While in recent years minority girls and women’s education has received a boost through scholarships by both the government and non-governmental institutions these women still continue to be victims of many social ills.
Minority women have for a long time been discriminated in various social spheres. Education is a major area where minority women always get discriminated (Andersen and Taylor 2013: 339). Such discrimination starts from their own families where boy child education gets preference in most minority ethnic groups. Many minority women only study to secondary level in education while some others even do not get to study past primary education levels. This occurs mostly because many of the parents in minority groups do not have enough incomes to sustain children of both sexes in school. This prompts the girls sometimes to drop out of school so that there are finances available for their brothers, who are seen as the key, future breadwinners after being educated. This leaves most minority women uneducated or moderately educated (Mendelberg et al 2012).
In addition, some of the criminals also get a chance to exploit the minority women with promises to a better life. For example, it is not surprising to see so many minority women being trafficked for slavery or prostitution. Even at homes, minority women are still not safe.
