In the given paper we will discuss the problem of drug addiction from the sociological perspective.
Classical sociological explanation of the fact of social problems’ occurrence is their connection with the general process of modernization endured by the Western European society during the last three centuries and which is characterized by the transition of the society from "traditional" to "modern". In the traditional societies, which are entirely based on traditions, a person is once and for all included in the general circle of things in the nature, and there are answers to all the questions of unchanging life (Leon-Guerrero, 2013). Therefore, despite the existence of the objective conditions, which bring suffering and concern, the society considers them to be "eternal" and refuses to recognize as those situations, which may and have to be changed. In this sense it is possible to state that traditional society doesnt face social problems as it simply doesnt define them as problems. Social problem as the concepts reflecting certain social phenomena and causing emotional and estimated reaction of people arise when the society starts the transition from traditional to modernized, that is accompanied with the series of social changes affecting both the material, and spiritual aspects of life of the society (Cornia, 2004).
A social worker deals with different people, including those whose behavior doesnt meet social norms. Besides, many social services are oriented on the work with the "groups of social risk": bums, individuals with alcoholic or drug addiction, criminals.
