Nicknames for professional teams had the same origins. The team was started as the Boston Red Stockings and in 1912, it became Braves for the first time. In the World Series of 1914, Braves was successful and this could be the reason why the Cleveland team that has been searching for a new nickname, became the Indians in 1915 (Murphree, D. S. 2012).
Washington’s DC Redskin was initially also the Boston Braves in 1932 when it was formed as it was the norm at this time to possess the same name for the teams whenever the football and the baseball shared the same stadium. The name was changed when they moved to Boston Red Sox home. The name was changed to Boston Redskins prior to moving back to Washington in 1933. Native American’s names and imagery use by this team started before 1933. The Washington Redskin were born officially in 1937 when the team moved to Washington, Dc (Nauright, et al. 2012). The controversy surrounding the Washington Redskin name involves the logo and the name of the team’s franchise that is situated at Washington DC metropolitan area. Individuals of Native America, tribes and organizations are not comfortable and have been questioning the why the name has been used for so long. The name is viewed by a lot of people as a racial abuse and offensive to American Indians. A campaign to have the team get another name was begun by an Indian nation that is based in New York. More than 115 organizations that are professional representing civil rights, athletic, educational, and scientific experts have prepared policies or resolutions that state the non native teams use of names of Native Americans is a type of harmful stereotyping that brings about misunderstanding and prejudice that adds to the difficulties that Native Americans face.
