The African slaves tried to free themselves from the slavery institution by forming relationships among themselves, fighting, and killing the oppressors, escaping, and refusing the cultures of the white men.
African slaves were discriminated by being captured, chained and separated from the whites. In a scene in the film Sankofa, Mona encounters slaves in chains. The slaves approach Mona to unchain them so that they may be free from the chains. When the astonished Mona tries to escape, she encounters white men in a separate section. She is taken back to the past. The oppressors capture her, rip off her clothes, and mark her with hot iron rods. The oppressors leave her with the other slaves. The capturing, chaining and humiliation of the Africans was a significant discrimination. The white men instilled physical and emotional torture on the slaves by beating them and having them chained and marked with hot iron rods. The capturing made it difficult for Mona to enjoy her free sight-seeing and interaction with her tourist photographer.
African slaves under the slavery systems tried to experience something other than misery by telling each other their experiences and developing relationships. Mona (now called Shola) finds herself as a house slave in an American plantation. Her oppressor forcefully rapes her. In a voice-over, she let the audience know that she was born in slavery. She develops an emotional attachment with Shango, one of the field slaves. According to Shango, he plans to kill the white slave owners and together they may embrace freedom. The slave community also found consolation by having Nunu, their spiritual center, around. Nunu was born in Africa and has a spiritual connection with her mother country. The slaves revere her since she once killed an abusive oppressor by merely staring at him. Nunu tells Shola that they will someday take flight back
