The impact that this had on her life is articulated in the following quote: “She changed schools, changed address - changed worlds, in effect - and moved into an octagonal bedroom downstairs from the Justices 2 year-old son.” It is quite obvious that living in a house where all her physical needs can be satisfied easily and at a proper level have positive influence on her wellbeing. Contrary to the foster care, she was able to enjoy a separate room, decent clothing and healthy food. It is quite understandable that all this contributed to the range of opportunities that were available to her. One would make no mistake that if it had not been for the support of Joe Justice, Della Mae would have never become a lawyer and earned a decent living. In other words, her talent for law would not find proper appliance because she could not have enter a law school because of lack of funds.
The next aspect that should be engaged in the discussion about the importance of social class is the same notion of social support, but from a different perspective, namely the social network that successful people build in the society. Thus, one of the discoveries that Della Mae made after being introduced to the world of the middle class is that people there “all had connections that fed into a huge web of people with power”. Indeed, the fact that the main character grew up in a different social class resulted in the fact that she was not able to boast an extensive social network which significantly limited her opportunities. In spite of the fact that she was determined to achieve everything by herself, she might have used some connections to accelerate this process.
