In this case, such households are dependent on various human services since the latter are seen as a source of income that will contribute to financial stability. In addition to that, the poverty situation might worse in case the family is not complete: as a rule, single mother are most vulnerable.
The region that was chosen, namely Alabama, is one of the southern states where the percentage of the African American population is relatively high. In spite of the fact that from economic point of view the state is question is not poor, a considerable number of people who live there lives in poverty or in deep poverty. This can be easily explained with the help of demographics. Thus, the population of Alabama is 4,833,722 people with African Americans comprising 26.6 per cent, which equals to 1,285,770 people; so, statistically speaking around a quarter of the population is likely to live in poverty (“Alabama QuickFacts”, n.d.). However, the actual figures are more optimistic: the number of people living below poverty level is 18.6 per cent which amounts to 899,072 people (“Alabama QuickFacts”, n.d.). As a result, the number of people that human services professionals will deal with is quite big.
Speaking of the challenges for human services in the given region, one should note several. To begin with, it is the long history of racial tensions in the region. Thus, Alabama was the platform of fight for civil right in the middle of the previous century; so, there are groups of people who remember this struggle and might adopt different points of view on it. Indeed, the issue of racism is extremely acute in this region in spite of the end of segregation as well as numerous efforts of the local communities to facilitate dialogue between different parts of the society.
