Social control refers to the strategies put in place to counter deviance and maintain law and order. Social control generally refers to societal mechanisms or the processes that are used to regulate individual and societal behavior so that there can be conformity to the rules or the norms set. This inquiry paper will explore the topic from a sociological point of view to have a better understanding by drawing support from various sources.
This is a relevant topic in this course as sociology refers to the academic study of social behaviors, its origins, development, organization, and institutions. It is therefore important to establish the sources of various acts of deviance in the society and how the society copes with them. This will introduce the concept of social control as one of the major reasons why there is social control is to address deviance in the specific social set up. This topic was chosen to broaden my understanding of sociology and have a better understanding of the social dynamics that govern it. My assumptions when I started the investigations were that deviance is subjective and can be defined over many societies as a whole. This meant that an act of deviance in a given societal set up will also match for the same in another set up. However, in my analysis, I came across social norms which are so specific to specific societies and which form a fundamental background to the understanding of deviance. Each society will therefore have its norms and anyone going or breaking them will be regarded as being deviant. To address that the societies have put in place various social control mechanisms which include seclusion and punishment to counter deviance.
